Dorothy is sending
this for me from our office in Colorado. I can't get on the internet but
I can receive Email. You can contact me directly, at riley@btl.net with
the subject to be Diving & Sailing Belize. If any one can help me with
information on the following subjects I would greatly appreciate
it. Preamble: I have a gas to diesel swap that I'm setting up in Belize,
Central America. The recipient vehicle is a Chevy pickup. 1983 3/4 ton
4wd standard 350. The Donor vehicle is a complete 1990 1/2 ton, 4wd GMC
Suburban, automatic with a 6.2 diesel. A side note; Diesel is $2.75 a
gallon and gas is $4.75 in US dollars here in Belize. I'm looking for
some knowledge and advice on the following swap questions.

* What changes do I need to make in the fuel setup? I now have dual
tanks with a switch unit near the tanks. This unit has a return
fuel line and is operated with an electrical switch on the dash. Is
purging necessary, will the fuel lines from the suburban diesel
just lay right in the truck or is there a trick to it.
* I have heard that the starter needs to be mated to the fly wheel?
any truth to this?
* Do I need to change the fly wheel or are there other reasonable
remedies. The guys that do the swaps down here add weight to and
then balance the gas fly wheel. It seems to me that if you are even
a bit off with this method the resulting vibration could cause
unusual bearing and seal wear.
* Do I need to match the fly wheel to a specific starter as has been
rumored or will any standard diesel fly wheel and starter work?
* Where do I find a standard diesel fly wheel and is the going price
800U$ ?
* After looking at the both chaises and motor spaces it looks like
things should just swap across and fit in. IE: Hydro boost brakes
and power steering unit, Radiator, battery boxes,
* What special changes do in need to make in the electrical, starting
system, I am going to do away with the automatic glow plug and
direct wire it to a switch but what about charging 2 batteries, do
I swap over the diesel charging harness and are there any
simplifications I can make or surprises to watch for.
* These guys are telling me they can do the job for 700 labor and
1000 in parts (see fly wheel). And they say they can do the job in
a week to a week and a half. Any comments on this?
* I would trade a good mechanic a vacation to over see the job. Must
be available now and pay your own air fair.

Thanks for any advise you can send me.
