View Full Version : CFM of air needed to cool 6.2L

Most gasoline V-8's require somewhere between 3000 to 4500 CFM of air moved thru the radiator to cool, bepending on size. Do these numbers hold true for the 6.2 or is the requirement more or less. :cool:
The 20" 5-blade fan was used on all 6.2L series\combos - no factory upgrade was offered. That large 5-blade (blades are 7"tall by 5" wide) fan moves as much air as the 17" gasser 7-blade fans. 5- and 7-blade gasser fans have 5" by 4" blades
The auto-transmission cooler is in the hot-tank, engine oil cooler is in the cool-tank.
The coolant system is t-stat gated bypass recirculation system, meaning water pump recirculates coolant thru the block until temps get high enough to require flow thru radiator.
Are you having a problem, or......?
FYI -
Chrysler offered a HD fan and clutch for the 440-series New Yorker and RV\motorhome, still available.
Fan is GM, clutch is AC-Delco HD.
Fan is 20" dia, seven-blades, 7" x 5" blade, fits standard AC-Delco fan clutch.
Clutch will not fit large-shaft 6.2L Diesel water pump.
Fan will fit oem 6.2L clutch. Napa offers HD towing\rv clutch for 6.2L.
Looks good on my truck.....

JD, What years should we be looking at in the junk yards? How do I know if I have the large shaft water pump? Thanks. JOhn
All 6.2L cw rotation water pumps have large shaft.
Use the 'Chrysler' fan on your clutch.
Late '70s - '80s New Yorker, rv, and motorhomes with 440cuin.
Max option fan from Gm was 18 and some" for 454 and such, but had 5" x 4" blades.
Dieselboy posted a Chrysler part number here or 6.2L forum a while back.

Not having a problem just wondering about the CFM requirement for a 1983 6.2L. smile.gif

According to a parts counter guy at my local Chrysler house he looked up a 1975 New Yorker with the 440 and the "max cooling option" and found the seven blade fan. pn: 4117084, $95.
Since I was told that prepayment would be required I haven't ordered one, so I cannot say for sure that this is the same fan that GMCTD runs. The descriptions do appear to match though, so if anyone can find a parts house that will let them look at it before buying, let the rest of us know if this is the right part number.
During the rebuild of my truck 84 cab, 80 front clip I ended up with several different fan blades,I even had one left over from a 82 OLDS 5.7 diesel.
The donor truck in my diesel conversion was a 83 Blazer, anyway all the blades got mixed together and I didn't know what came from where I ended up with a 19" 7 blade with 6"X4" blades most likely from the original chassis that started the project, a 75 4X4 1/2T 350 HD with HD front springs and skid plate.
Don't have a clue what I got but it moves a bunch of air...........Merle
