Question for JK.

Iv'e been goofin around with my tech 1 in the timing dept. Noticed the factory manual says to set the pump timing at 3.5 . When accesing the timing set menu i see (desired timing) to be 0.0 . Is that value built in the chip or do they all say that ? Where do you like to set the pump timing ? I know you like -1.94 on the offset . I was at -1.14 and set it to -1.85 . Has some more pull to it. Thanks!!

The Desired value of 0.0 is the computers way of telling the pump to go to neutral timing so that the pump can be positioned. The 3.5 is just a general number to get you within the range of the stepper motor's stroke.

If you have the pump in a position that -1.85 can be acheived, try again some more. It's a lot like roullette. It can hit multiple settings from one "lay" of the pump. Soon as your number shows up, stop the learn.

Yea i had -1.94 on the screen and i wiffed and missed it, it was after 3 am so atleast i have a excuse. Will try again. Thanks for the responce.

What is the timing supposed to be under normal conditions.
I was just looking at mine yesterday and it is around 10 degrees at idle and went up over 18 at 3500 rpm.

To actually set the pump timing so the stepper motor is within it operating perimeters you must have a scan tool capable of doing the TDC time set, by doing this procedure you are comanding the stepper motor to full retard, you set the pump timing by moving the pump, once you have achieved the 3.5 deg then you stop the learn procedure, when the learn procedure is stopped the stepper motor comes on and brings the desired timing to 8.5 or what ever. Then you use your scan tool and perform the TDC offset learn, that is the part that JK has found by locking on to the -1.94 and stopping the learn procedure there that has yielded more power. I have found that my Tech 1 does a superb job. Other than a Tech 2 i dont know of another scanner that will perform these functions. So the 8.5 or what ever you are seeing is Not the above explanation. Hope i said that right.

I'm actually making a strong push to release my laptop Scan Soft program this fall. Just looking at making it USB rather than serial...

Thats really cool. I would think that there would be a ton of buisness out there for that. Is your program 6.5 specific ? Will it do things that a tech 1 wont do on OBD 1 ? Is it 1 & 2 compatable ?
