I know the 599 block can be bored out to a 6.5l, but is that the only block that can be bored? I have a '82 6.2l with a block casting of 14022660. Can this block also be bored out to 6.5 specs, or do I have to find a 599 block?

The 12552929 block ( -2929 ) is also intended for either 6.2L or 6.5L engines. It is believed that it was originally a Goodwrench replacement block. If you find one in 6.2L size, it can be bored to standard 6.5L dimensions and retain strong cylinder walls for a healthy turbocharging service.

Rumor has it that if you have the 82 red block it is the strongest casting gm made due to high nickel content which made it harder to machine and since time is money to the factory boys it under went a alloy change for 83 and up.
So now the delima is strength or size, depends on you, personaly unless you want to search for a 599 or a 2929 block I would just talk to a repuable rebuilder for their recomendation as to max overbore size and go from there.
Use the latest 6.5 heads valve train etc,and of course a steeeeeeenking turbo HeHe Dr. Lee :D
Talk to Britannic his 6.2 is right up there with a 6.5 maybee better than most.

After looking around some, I e-mailed Jamie Avant at The Diesel Depot (http://www.thedieselpage.com/vendors/avant.htm). He replied with
If your engine is a 2pce rear
seal model you can definitely build it up, but it can't be bored to a 6.5L,
you'd only want to take it to a .040 over 6.2L.. So it looks like I will be building a 6.2L instead of a 6.5L...at least for the time being.

Does anyone know what years the 660 block was available in? My 93 hummer has a 660 block, so I think it is not the original but a reman, how do I tell the year a block was cast? My 660 block is not red BTW.

Now I am confused, my block casting number is the same as his 14022660 and date code of J302. My hummer was built in Dec 92, so is this an 82 reman or 92 original block?

Good Day!
A 6.5 is only ≈ 18 cubes bigger than a 6.2 (figured at 61 cubic inches/liter). It doesn't seem like that would make much difference. Dodge is presently making 555 lb/ft of torque with 18 cubes less than your 6.2.
Blessings!

The '82 is also the 'monsta valves' engine, right? Nice find.

I'm not sure just how these casting numbers work but I have a 90 sub with the 660 block and an engine out of a 89 sub on the floor to build up, it also has the 660 block. Both of these are J engines.

Hmmm so they used the 660 block for 10 years? It doesn't seem like a casting number would go that long without changing. Does anyone have a list of all GM 6.2/6.5 diesel casting numbers? I know someone somewhere has this information!!
