Dr.Lee,I am presently using a aux tran filter that uses a Wix 51515 automotive oil filter, A guy from Bowtie told me not to use that kind of filter something about the paper filter media infiltrating into tran and causing grief there.
His recomendation is a small little filter with a magnet in inlet end that resembles the old inline gas filters from the 60's & 70's.
I'm personaly a little skeptic about that claim,if it can hold up under the heat of engine oil it should be ok for tran fluid also.
I kind of thing that the lad is on commission and just wants to sell something.
As always your thoughts are appreciated. smile.gif

Neither engine oil nor tranny fluid will cause a GOOD filter to shed particles or fibers.

I have been using an external spin-on filter for years on my tranny with no problems. What does Mr. Bowtie think is inside the spin-on filters on the new Allison transmissions ? ? ? ? ?

Small would be bad -- chance restriction , clogging.

Dr Lee,

Would the same filter that I use for my Dr. Lee by-pass oil (Donaldson P550551 IIRC 3 micron)?

The base that I find for these filters has a by-pass in it, so plugging would not be a issue.

It would be installed in the return line from the trany cooler to the pan.
