Tire Pressure

I own a 2001 x-cab 2500HD TD looking for advise on tire pressures. Where I normally operate the truck empty with the exception of towing an RV on the weekends with a 700 pound hitch weight complete with a distribution hitch running the pressures as recomended on the door seems to me high. I have dropped the pressure down to 65psi all around and this seems to give a much smother ride but I'm some what concerned of tire damage. Wear seems to be good across the tire.

I have an '01 3500 DRW ext cab and when I'm towing my 5er I run 70 psi in the rears and 65 up front. When I run solo I keep the tire pressure @ 55psi. I have 27K on it and no tire problems yet. My wife drives an '04 Suburban 2500 and we run 45 psi in the tires all the time(no towing)and at 5400 miles I just rotated the tires yesterday and saw no tire problems.

I have a 2500HD SRW and with the truck empty or loaded with my 5'er, the front axle weight is 4100 lbs. With the 5'er hooked up, my rear axle weight is 4400 lbs.

Logically, since the factory recommends 55 lbs on the front axle unloaded and it weighs the same loaded, I don't change it when I'm loaded. Since the rear axle weight is just 300 lbs heavier, I run it at 65 lbs, just to be safe. Rides like a dream....

I changed from 245's to 265's a few years back, all are "E" rated. Solo I run 55psi on all four, rides great. Towing I run 60psi front, 75psi rear. The 265's will carry more weight @80psi than the 245's. I have requested a tire inflation chart from Michelin, but they don't list the 265's :rolleyes: I know all my axle weights when loaded or solo, but would like to tune in my tire pressure closer to the correct rating. Wait and see, I guess. ;)

I run mine at a minimum of 70 psi. all of the time, because I tow a lot. The rated load capacity is determined at 80 psi. on the tires, so I want to keep it close so that I don't have any side wall issues. I don't want to mess with changing the pressures back and forth every other day. When fully loaded for a trip, my Suburban weighs at or a little over 8600 lb., which is the GVWR for the truck.

I run 55 psi all around when empty or carrying up to 1,000# in the bed. Air the rears to 80 psi when heavier than that. I wouldn't air up and down every other day. . . if I was towing that much I'd leave them pumped up.
