I will be upgrading the W/Pump over Easter as well as replacing the timing chain.
Are all timing chain kits the same or is there a prefered brand. I'm thinking chain size durability/quality.
In your reply where is the best place to purchase it
I am not considering the gear set at this time due to cost and the miles on my truck.
comments please

I changed mine out about 15 months ago and I just bought the kit from a local parts house. It was a good US made set up and appeared to be the same as the OEM.

What was your reason to change your timing chain?

Sorry for the delay. I left a question on page 2 topic of "Help Smoke at Start and Compression Test Results" That should explain my issue.
I'm going to upgrade the water pump next so I might as well sinse I'm half way there.

Why not go with the DSG gear? $ sign's?

Mainly cost and the advice from others.
Do you think that the DSG gears are worth it after 150,000 miles. Is it a gotta have?
And the big question is whether it will stop my smoking at start up. A new chain will tell me whether that is the cause for my complaint.
nigeljones I feel your pain. I installed injectors today and await tomorrow for morning smoke at start-up. I hope it doesnt otherwise I will be following your path next. Tell me how the timing chain or gears turns out.

That's why I did it too, and I was spending a couple of thousand in doing different upgrades and maintaince and didn't want to spend a couple hundred more on the gears when the chain worked for 167,000 miles okay and figured who know's I'm hoping it will go to 300,000 miles but that's always a guess.
