I have my engine at the machine shop, due to rust on the front main they need to turn the crank to clean it up. would grinding the crank .010 really effect it adversely? I know the normal advice is not to do it. Will a crank from a 96 "506" block work in my 93 '599" block? Any ideas what a good usable crank costs? thanks for any advice.

Can't polish the rust off? If they grind it, be sure they grind the fillets correctly.

That crank should have releived, cold-rolled fillets...at least mine did. You can grind .010 off without hurting anything and you never touch the fillets because they are undercut to a smaller diameter than the journal.

THe sourface will still be a little rough with just a polish and he thinks .010 over will clean them up nicely.
This rebuild is turning me into a nervous mother,I cant wait until the engine is done and its back into the truck. Just doing a pretty standard rebuild, but i am balancing the rotating assembly, thesePistons (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7967955417&category=33623) and thats about it. Still undecided on a gear drive.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Cheers, erik

Wel the spare crank i had would have needed to be ground as well. I decided to have it ground .010 then have the crank re-nirtided. Its only money at this point.

Index grinding only costs a little more and ensures that eveything is correct. I also had mine nitrided.
