View Full Version : Tire Question 245's - 285's

Okay, I've read a lot of intersting stuff on these boards, and now need some advise from those that have "been there done that". My 02 came stock with Bridgestone 245 75 16's on it. Due to wear and being stuck in mud twice last year, its time to replace them. I see where some have moved up to 285's, but is that on the stock aluminum rim? I looked at the B.F.G 265 All Terrains, and liked the looks for dealing with the mud. However, if 285's will go on the stock rim, I can gain some height and more meat on the road. Any comments would be appreciated.

285's will fit on the stock rim, plenty of people have done it.
i definitely would not. find a 285 section tire and look up what the manufacturer suggests for rim width. you will not find anything remotely close to the 6.5" of the stock rim.
i put my michelin and revo 285's on 8" wide american racing rims instead.
265's will work okay on stock rims but will ride better on 8" rims too.

I thought the 285's would be a little aggresive for the stock rims. I'm not sure if I want to invest in new wheels, for a tire I only need during hunting season. Then again they would last longer if I alternated between the two sets and the hassle of asking a Ford to pull you out of the mud.

PUt the 285's on there and don't worry about it.
I was tired of being stuck in the mud, so I upgraded to 285/75 16 BFG mud terrain t/a tires. I wider wheel would be best, but they seem to be working all right so far. I have just about 20k and I don't see any signs of unusual wear or anything like that.

I swapped the pathetic stock tires out when the truck was new. I have had 285/75-16 BFG AT's on there for 33k miles and counting now. They look better, work better, have a higher load rating at lower pressure and have worn perfectly on the stock wheels. Just do it ;)

FYI
I have talked with people that say their 285x75x16s rub occasionly.
Mine rub on turns. I needed to trim a bunch and tie back the wheel liners. This is on Centerline 8" wide wheels.
I run 265 Michelins most of the time with Bridgestone Blizzak 235's getting winter duty, and my 285's getting truck pull etc duty in summer.
I use a 305/50/20 tire on Weld Wheels in the summer. They rub a little bit when I'm going slow on a turn (haven't touched the torsion bars), but overall, they're a nice fit.
It's all in the backspacing. ;)

I just went through this with my 2005 GMC. The 285 hit the bottom of the front bumper big time when the tire was turned. This was with aftermarket 16x8 MB Motoring wheels. I went to a 265 and it "barely" rubbed a tiny little section of the bottom bumper corner. I trimmed a 1/2" wide x 4" long strip off the bottom and you can't really tell. The 265 on the 16x8 still gives it a "non-stock" look and sticks out just a bit. Oh yeah, I also had the front torsions cranked up about 1 1/2" to level the front. Here's a few pics:

I went to Discount Tire and picked up a set of 285 75 16 Dominator Sport AT. I was told they are made by Cooper. I have them on the stock rims.
I intend to eventually put them on a set of aftermarket rims, but if they wear ok i might leave them alone.
They look like they would rub at full lock when going into a steep drive way, but I have been on them a month and haven't had any rubbing issues.
I like them so far.
I have a set of the Dominator brand tires on my wifes Camaro and they have been good on that car.
I put on 255x85R16s Dunlop ATXTs and gained a bit more height than the 285s would give. A tad wider than the 245s. Fit just fine on stock rims.
Had the torsion bars cranked (green cam keys gave me a 2" lift) Went thru gumbo mud, rocks, washboard, good sized ruts, some snow on a 2 week hunting trip.
Three moose later, very happy with the performance of the tires...included my choice of size and the torsion bar crank.

I had 285/75/16 on stock rims. dealer ran a force balance test and told me that the tires were to big for the rims. I was also told that was what was causing the shake between 40-48 miles. So I change out to 265/75/16 BFG, still have the vibration. The dealer finally tells me that it's a problem with the turck. I would go with a bigger rim if ya go with the 285.Just my own 2 cents.

I put the larger tires (285's) on my stock rims and the truck "swayed" from side to side when changing lanes above 50 mph. It did not feel stable at all. I scaled back to 245's and that made the problem all but disappear. I would upgrade to wider wheels before doing this again.
One thing you need to watch is ply rating and load rating. Personally, I don't agree with running anything less than a load range E on these trucks.
I run 265's on PYO wheels on both trucks. Just a tad wide for the wheel spec, but not too far off...
I need new tires soon...thanks to John....and have considered 285's this time. I have run 10 ply 265's up to this point and really like the way they handle towing and empty, but wouldn't mind the better looks of a bigger tire. Just never ran anything bigger to compare. So those of you that have run both...what do you think?

Could you let me know the exact type and size of rim and tires you have on your 05. They look great.
