Hey Guys,
We are having one hell of an ice storm right now. I went outside to go to work last night and hit the defrost button and the rear window heated and melted the ice and so did the pass outside mirror but the driverside one didn't melt the ice off,any clues as to what the problem is. It's an 02GMC 2500HD D/A Crew and it is still under warranty. They are the stock mirrors so far.

ATVPilot,
Sounds like the heating element in the mirror glass failed,or a broken wire.If you take the glass off the mirror(I'm not sure how to do this).Using an ohm meter check the resistance of the heating element it shold be very low 1 to 3 ohms is about normal.Wiht the glass still off you can check for voltage and ground to the heating element also.
Hope this helps, Tom

If all you need to do is check the wiring, DON'T remove the glass. It is not removable (usually) in one piece.

Pop off the "shark fin" on the inside. It is just held in place with friction clamps. The wiring connector is accessible there. Could be that the connector has become loose, or is dirty. I'd suggest trying to clean it and applying some dielectric grease before connecting.

If you have voltage to it, and cleaning doesn't work, probably the mirror element. This is not serviceable, so you'll just have to settle for a whole new mirror, complements of GM.

have had to replace both of our truck's stock mirrors due to failure of the defrost feature ... both replacements have worked well .... Jim
