I'm getting ready to change the gear lube in the rear differential (G80). Can someone tell me what size allen wrench fits the drain and fill bolts ? Or is it just a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive ?

Tim,

The fill I believe is 15mm and the drain is a 3/8 ratchet size...

The rear differential uses 3/8 square drive for both the fill plug and the drain.

The front differential uses 15mm socket for the fill and a different size (13mm??) for the drain.

Well we must have different A$$ES....... tongue.gif Cause I have ,YUP,the square drive down in the bottom of the differential.....But I see NO square drive to put the "MEAT-TA- BALL" juice back in...Just the 15MM hex head bolt about mid way up the cover,sorta of center........ :confused: So where is it hiding that I don't see it?All the older chucks pre Eaton had the square drive fill no no drain plug......I know I got's a EATON LOCKER,one I ordered it, and it's standard equipment on a 3500 ta boot......

Wow my A$$ is different, even on my truck....... :eek:
Must be like the tires .... Some got bolts some got square drive plugs......No rhyme no reason......

All the Yankee stuff is different from the real stuff, they didn't figure you guys would know the difference - whoops, should have said you-all wouldn't know the difference.

Different axles 2500 v 3500?
Mine is 15 mm.

Just looked at 2002 brochure.
2500HD axle rated 6084 lbs.
3500 axle rated 8550 lbs.
Interestingly if it's 3500 4wd it goes to 9000 lbs for cclb. Springs stay at 8600 tho.
Three rear axles???

What's this stuff about different axles? According to many threads I've read here the 2500HD & 3500HD have the same axles. Or are you guys talking about a different model?

I think for the most part, the axles are the same, regardless of weight rating. I think the differences we're seeing is just a production thing- whatever was in the bin the day the differentials went together determined what kind of fill plugs we got- some got 15mm, some 3/8. Could be different manufacturing plants too- one plant builds 3500 axles, they use 15mm fill plugs, and another plant builds the 2500 axles, but uses the 3/8 sq. plugs...

Something like that anyway.. smile.gif

6.0l 2500HDs get the old 10.5" 14 bolt. All 8100s and Dmaxs get the 11.5" 14 bolt. Duallie axles have a higher weight rating because of the extra tires. SRW axle weight ratings are limited to ~6K lb because of the tires.

Ok Black Dog, I can accept that explanation, it sounds reasonable. Yes of course the 3500 will have a higher rating due to the dual tires. It's my understanding the 2500HD Dmax is essentially a one ton SRW vehicle.
