I had my truck a the dealer for A/C work and also reported to the service writer that I was having 5-4-5 shifting issues when towing with the cruise control on.

VENT ON....

The dealer told me they can install the 5th gear lockout switch for about $250.00. I asked the dealer just to update the TCM and I will install the switch only if necessary. Dealer claims they have to install the switch before the update can be installed...

ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

To top it all off the dealer told me (and wrote on the service ticket) " Don't use cruise control when towing "

This takes the cake....at $42,000 truck and I can't use the cruise when towing....

I didn't have the time to ask to see the page in the owners manual or tech tips for that one. But, when the dealer get the customer satisifaction survey....Some one is gonna get slammed....

OK, VENT OFF.

Do I really need this update, or the 5th gear lockout?

Is there a place I can get the update done?

I am driving from VA to CA in a few weeks...

Hmmm. I just did similar at my local dealership. They found the A/C system was .50 lbs low but no leaks and they did a TIS search for data update, found the update and solved my cruise control shift problem with new software. I had 35,980 miles on the thing and figured I better get it done fast.

Solved my problem, then again I have a 2001.

Find a new dealer, there is an update to the TCM and ECM to correct this problem. Had it done to my 2001 and it helped allot. Might try a search on here about "Cruise Control" and find some more information about the TIS on the 5-4-5 shifting.

My dealer hasn't heard of the bulletin. Does anyone have the bulletin number for the 5th gear lockout for an '01 or '02 so that I can get it done under warranty?
Thanks.

There's not an actual TSB on this particular problem. It's only mentioned in the monthly Techlink articles. Getting it warranteed is solely at the discretion of the dealer, but I think the dealers are finding out that GM won't reimburse them for it. Some have mentioned getting it done under warranty, and having friends go back later to the same dealer, only to be denied warranty coverage for the modification. It's a crapshoot. Good luck!

Would someone be so kind as to give me the part number for the OD lockout switch. None of the Dealers in my area know anything about it when I asked. Even thier parts Dept. didn't have a clue. They said if I could come up with a part number, then they could do something. Thanks
