I am getting ready to change the rear end gear with Mobil 1 75w-90. I was wondering if i needed to add anything for the locking differential? Thanks in advance.

He means if you have the G80 (RPO) locking rear.

Use a good all synthetic rated GL-5 at 75W-90 for normal conditions. No additives needed.

racerfan#3,

Sorry, I thought when you referred to a locker you already knew ........ If you don't have your window sticker, then look in the glovebox, should be a label attached stating options, via numbers as Hoot said ..... If your still not sure chime back in and ask ..... After all that is what this forum is all about ..... An infomation highway .......

What would happen if limited slip additive was added? Would it cause any damage?

On my last truck with the G80 the dealer put in the additive when they serviced the diff!!

kanton1,

You'll have to define last truck ......... If it had a limited slip, needed additive ....... If it is the Eaton locker new in 2001, I believe, no additive . The additive is for the clutches .....No need for Eaton ... Would, or will it due damage, if added to the LOCKER ..... I'm sure it will in some way contaminate the oil, perhaps shorten life span on fluid .... If I were to put it in by accident, I would drain and refill .....I would Rather be safe then sorry....

mackin,

my last truck was a 2000 Silverado 1500 with the G80 rear. I did not know the locker was changed recently.

Thanks,
Kyle

older style clutch type "posi" unit use the additive to stop the clutches from chattering when wheel speeds are not the same from side to side. It will not hurt any thing BUT I am sure you will not drive it for long like this (It will drive you crazy when you turn)snap, snap snap,or bang, bang, bang! :D more so if you have the power turned on!!!
