View Full Version : 3500 outside tire wear

Wonder if anyone is having the same problem as I am.

I have a 2001 3500 EC.

The outside duallie tires are wearing about twice as fast as any of the other tires on truck.

I have heard that normally inside duallies wear faster due to road crowning but mine are opposites.

This is the 2nd set of tires I have put on at 55000 miles. I try to keep them rotated but in order to counteract this wear it would have to be every 1000 miles.

Also, maybe its better to just have to buy 2 tires frequently than have to replace them all sooner than normal as they have been rotated frequently into the outside duallie position.

Any thought?

Jim,

I've got the same issue with mine. Outsides wear much faster than insides. Don't know why.

Outsides always wear faster than the rest. Always been that way. The outsides do drag (very little) on every turn. The rear axle pivots on the inside tires. Kind of like having a solid axle and making a turn. Believe it or not.

we're on the road full time rv'ing. our trailer scales at about 13,500 with the whole rig running at about 21,000 lbs. i noticed the same kind of tire wear almost right away. by rotating about every 10000 miles, i got over 50,000 miles out of the first set of tires. (wrangler a/t's) when i changed, they had over 5/32 left on them so they still had some miles in them. about half that 50,000 miles was under load, the rest running solo on side trips etc. i watch pressures close and try to have the rotations done in smaller out of the way places so i'm not paying full bore city labor rates. nothing special other than that. we run hard when we're on the road and hit all the back roads and off road areas wherever we stop.

I've got about 22,000 on mine, with the wrangler a/t. Probably about 25-30% worn. I rotate every 5,000 mi. At this point, I haven't noticed any unusual wear on any tires.

Is it possible the axle has a positive arch in it to compinsate for heavy loads? I know the larger truck axles use this design.

I agree with Maverick. All our trucks wear the outside faster.Regardles of brand of truck. We tried running +5 lbs of air on the insides to compensate, but to no avail. Its the same on our trailers, the front axel wears faster. But we maintain a no rotation policy. The rears last about 50-60,000 miles.

BROKERS: Why the "No Rotation" rule? I'll be in the same boat when I get my trailer.

If Brokers followed the 5000-7500 mi recomendation, he would rotate them almost weekly.

Besides Dey is rotatin as dey is goin down the road. :D

On tow trucks I never rotated the tires, just replaced the fronts 2 to 1 over the rears.

We have been through the wringer and the math and all we gain by rotating tires is 5200mi.That being said, it's too time consuming! We just replace the set as they need it.
I want you guys to always to remember that i haul out of convenience and nothing else.I make my $ on what i'm hauling, not at hauling! My hauling is a break even at best!
