I have sold my 2500 and await an '04 3500. Pulled the Mag Hytec diff cover to move it to the new truck. It has about 15,000 on the gear oil. Both magnets were COVERED with metal shavings. I changed the gear oil at 500 miles, after my first trailer pull to the mountains and then again 5000 miles later. I have pulled the dipstick a couple of times to check level and have cleaned off metal each time.
Point is I was amazed by the amount of stuff I cleaned out. The new truck will get more regular check ups. Be sure you change the gear oil out if you have a new rig. If you don't have a cover with a dipstick I would suggest you pull yours off every 10,000 and clean the junk out. A fresh fluid change will help. The factory service intervals are ok if you plan to sell before you warranty expires!!
