Back from the dealer's.

Transmission acted just like I'd hoped, and ****d upon full Throttle- Tech hooked up to the system- showed code P0043..Had not seen this one here- he showed me the screen- its a bad FUEL FILTER.

He had the fuel system hooked up to some vacum thing- told me it should never get above 5- it was at almost 10..says that when I give it full throttle, it "runs out of fuel"..basically because the fuel filter is so nasty.

they did not replace the fuel filter today- waiting until Wednesday when the new parts that they had to order for other problems came in.

Hydrobooster- on order- part is in Boston, should be in Tuesday- appointment is for Wednesday. He showed me where it is leaking from....no hassle to get it fixed like last dealer.

Seatbelts- not too sure on these- He wants me to come up on Wednesady, take 1 of the trucks on the lot for the day while he is working on mine, and see if the rear seat belts lock like mine do, if they do NOT, he has NO problem ordering the new retractors- He seems to think that even though I don't think they (the kids are moving)..the ride could be bumpy enough to lock the retractors...either way- I'll end up with new belts...

THE STEERING RATTLE-- I believe he has fixed it, he did not do the bearing kit- because as I had posted before, he had to "see my truck" prior to ordering parts....he did show me exactly what he did, no grease- nothing that I had heard done on here before- and in a few days, if the rattle is still gone, I'll tell you guys what he did..After only driving it home, in the rain, its hard to tell if its REALLY gone. John has taken the truck to work now, and he hears it EVERY day in the shop driveway- so I will know by tonight if its any better, and in a few days- we will know for sure.

I asked him about the 5,000 transmission filter change, he says not required- he did say that he will/can change it on Wednesday if we would like, but its not something that needs to be done yet....we'll see if the fuel filter fixes it.

so theres my update, and I will have more on Wednesday, regarding the transmission/fuel filter, and if the rattle is still there.

Although GM for some reason has not caught on to the 5,000 mile filter change, it is an Allison recommendation. If you go to the Allison website and search through the publications until you find the 1000 series mechanic's tips you can find the information there. Big Al has also posted it several times, so a search here for spin-on filter or something similar should bring up some of his posts.

The 5K spin on trans Filter change is critical! filter cost about $9 from the Allison dealer (don't get it from GM) and put it on quick!!!!

You don't have to change all the fluid just the filter at 5K, but now that you have 25K on the truck probably best to do both.

This is no BS, it is real and the best thing you can do to save that tranny for a long life!

well, after looking over our "manual" seems we missed a fuel filter change- or close to two... so I guess thats why I need that done.
We are up for an oil change as well- in 200 miles, and since you all say to change the spin on filter- that will be done on Wednesday as well. I do not have a Allison dealer near here, so we will go with the dealer filter..

update on what I thought about the rattle...

the fix that the tech did today did NOT fix my rattle, tonight it had stopped raining for a few minutes, so I went out around the block, sure enough the rattle is there still, though it may be quieter? or maybe its just in my head.

his fix was- the master cylinder, has a pin underneath it holding it on- the pin is about 1 inch long- he replaced it with one that was 2 inches long and a smidgen wider. When sitting in the cab- with the windows up and engine on, and he moved around the MC the rattle sounded 100% like the steering rattle. VERY weird ! It didn't cost me anything to try this fix, and even if it didn't work- at least I now know what not to try again... like the grease- I WONT do it again, I don't really care what GM has to say about it, it doesn't work and I'm not going to be without my truck while they put it in.
I have to call tomorrow and double check that the hydrobooster made it from Boston up here for my appt on Wednesday- and I will ask tell them to go ahead and order the bearing kit... see where that ends up.

more to follow-after the filter changes

MudNurI. As ChevysRus stated, it is important to change the spin-on at the first 5000 miles and each 50000 or 24 months after for standard duty useage. Severe duty requires these intervals be reduced to 25000/12 months. This info is in the Allison Operators manual # OM3063EN, pg 49. As I posted on another topic, this filter provides filtered oil directly to the valve body/solenoids which control the operation of the transmission. Regular filter changes could eliminate potential shift problems. happy motoring

Earlier post the fuel filter was clogged and the tranny filter has not been replaced about 25K to date. Dealer changed the fuel filter and now they have to change the Tranny filter next trip to the dealer later this week.

Fuel filter was NOT changed yesterday- it's being done Tomorrow when everything else is fixed.... The transmission filter will also be done tomorrow.

I'm not sure why Allison says to change it and GM does not though...that kind of suprises me. Seems that someone at GM may not have been listening to Allison talking...

those of you with the 2002- does your manual say to change it at the 5,000 mile mark? Wonder why its 5,000 miles, not 1,000 miles like the rear end stuff, and first oil change?

again, because of all of you the filter will be changed, what a great bunch of people! Helping me spend John's hard earned money LOL! smile.gif

thanks again!

Well ChevyRus and others are 100% correct. Get that tranny filter changed. I personally recommend one at 500 miles, another at 5K and then 15K miles. I cut all my filters to assess what's going on. The first filter at 500 miles had typical metal shavings from what appears to be the tranny gears seating to all it's mating parts and some general by-products of operation. I did another filter at 5K and found very little I had to look very very close(however those are the most dangerous as they plug a filter quicker) My 3rd filter was at 20K and it was spotless and had no build up on the magnet either. To date I have absolutely no problems with tranny.

The fuel filter is a 10K mile maintenance for me regardless. It is easy to do and cheap insurance. With gas quality what it is, best to stay on top of it for awhile.

As for the steering rattle...I have heard it mine from time to time, very faint, and only when turning very hard right and hitting bumps...I have not pursued repair at this time since it has not really been an issue that has been ongoing or permanent, However, if GM has a TSB for it, that will replace it with a re-design shaft, then I will have it done. But adding in grease to it is a band-aid approach and will for sure comeback as the grease migrates elsewhere...

Best Regards.
