How about selling the truck? Use the $ from selling the truck to go get that cummins wrapped by a Dodge, and guess what? It's gonna have a warranty.

1. The Cummins conversion may be considerably cheaper than buying a Dodge (even the same 1997 model year his Chevy is).

2. Dodge's mega cab does not come with an 8-foot bed, and Dodge's crew cab is only somewhere between GM's extended cab and crew cab.

3. Those who've completed this conversion have a unique truck, not another cookie-cutter type.

Good luck moedog. How about some details? 12V or 24V? Keeping the IFS up front or are you converting to a solid front axle?

I'd be remiss not to mention the Duramax as another potential heart transplant. It's not as long as a Cummins, and for many people it answers the space question of using an engine-driven fan or electric fans.

Last year I re-powered truck #2 after it broke a crankshaft.

I purchased a 58K mile 6.5L with all accessories and ECM from a 1998 C3500 truck, 4L80E tranny, 4.10 rear end for $4200 + shipping. Later sold the rear end for $500 and tranny for $750.

Prices are dropping quickly on 6.5s as they reach obsolescence. I'd say what you have is worth $3500, tops.

YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON BURRITO, IF I WANTED A DODGE AND ALL THEIR PROBLEMS ID GO BUY ONE. MY CHEVY OUT DOES IT IN EVERY DETAIL BUT THAT GREAT CUMMINS. IT IS A 97 12V WITH A TORQUE PLATE AND MARINE INJECTORS. APPX.310HP AND 700LBS TORQUE.
ALL STAYS CHEVY, BUT THE TRANSFER CASE AND THAT WILL BE DODGE CAUSE THE OUTPUT SHAFT IS STRONGER. MY MECHANIC THAT DOES THEM MOVES THE ENTIRE ENGINE BACK 4INCHES TO BE ABLE TO USE DODGE FAN AND AVOID ELECTRIC FANS. HE REBUILDS BOTH CUMMINS AND 6.5'S BUT ADMITS 6.5'S DONT LIKE ALOT OF WEIGHT. ILL KEEP MY MEMBERSHIP UP ON THE PAGE AND KEEP ALL POSTED. MY MECHANIC GETS 2500.00 FOR 6.5'S WITH JUST THE ENGINE CONSTANTLY AS GOOD USED ONES ARE VERY SCARCE AROUND HERE
THANKS

Just make sure that with the torque plate & injectors that you are watching both your EGTs and your water temp especially if you plan to tow. Pulled my fiver up the Grapevine on I-5 (long 6% grade) at 65mph with my dodge and while the EGT was safe at 1200 degrees, the water temp started to climb to the red zone 'til I backed off of it.

Moedog, how much is the conversion going to cost?
