Does anyone know if it is possible to have a handset
installed to run in conjunction with the OnStar system?
I realise that the hands off system can be used whilst
driving, but it is a pain to have to verbally dial a
number using the speech recognition system. Since I need
to call many different and new numbers each day, my
OnStar is not being used.It is easier to use my hand
held cell phone.
Also, can the GPS feature be brought out and displayed?
railbuff,
You can use "nametags" to speed up frequently dialed numbers... Here is a quote form myonstar.com..
Creating and Deleting Speed Dial Nametags
You can create and store up to 20 speed-dialing 'Nametags' (up to 32 digits each) for all of your frequently-dialed numbers. You'll use a simple voice command to dial the telephone numbers behind the Nametags.
To create a Nametag:
What You Do --- OnStar's Response
1. Press the White Dot button 1. "Ready"
2. Say "STORE" 2. "Number Please"
3. Slowly say the telephone number to be stored digit by digit 3. OnStar will confirm each digit by repeating it back to you
4. When finished, say "STORE" again 4. "Nametag Please"
5. Say "<your nametag name>" 5. "Again"
6. Repeat "<your nametag name>" 6. "Once More"
7. Repeat "<your nametag name>" 7. "Storing <your nametag name>, Goodbye"
To delete a Nametag:
What You Do --- OnStar's Response
1. Press the White Dot button 1. "Ready"
2. Say "DELETE" 2. "Nametag Please"
3. Say "<the nametag to be deleted>" 3. "Delete <nametag>, Yes or No"
4. Say "YES" 4. "Deleting Nametag, Goodbye"
rail buff from personal experience get the safety package and a cell phone with ATT if you intend on travelling out side Ontario, south that is!!! The Onstar analog communication they claim to be North america wide isnt true, especially when the cell phone companys want your credit card number before they will let you talk on Onstar.
good luck
railbuff,
Check this link from an old topic:

Stoner's post gave a link to TAP INTO ONSTAR (http://members.cox.net/onstar/). There are detailed pics and a discussion forum. I don't think this works for 2003 and newer trucks though.
