I took apart the rear hub as a result of the poor emergency brake performance. I found that the shoes for the emergency brake were covered in axle lube. So I began replacing the axle seals. The dealer sold me a part number 15007008. It fit in the hub just fine, but doesn't seem to slide on the axle far enough. I've beat the hub with a wood block and a 2 lb hammer. The new seal is a much different design than what came off. There is a shoulder on the axle that the seal would seem to ride on, but the seal's inner diameter seems too small. Any help, thoughts or part numbers from somebody other than the dealer would really be appreciated.

I've not done any maintenance on the rear diff on these trucks, but here's a possible source - "other than the dealer".

Give the guys at Randy's Ring & Pinion a call at: 1-800-292-1031 or visit them online at www.ringpinion.com (http://www.ringpinion.com)

They were working on a 2500HD rear axle in their service area last fall when I visited them in Everett, WA. I would bet they have the parts and can answer your questions.

I just performed the seal swap. Here is what you do: Make sure both seal halves come off. The new seal is one peice, but when they fail, they seperate. There will be the peice of the seal in the hub and a then a rubber peice with a metal race attached to the spindle. The new one fits like this: open end goes into the hub with the brown metal race facing up at you. The new seal will not fit all the way into the hub, knock it until it mounts flush to the wheel bearing. This should leave the metal race exposed.
