View Full Version : Is 25k too long to wait for 1st Allison drain?
I just helped a friend do his 1st Allison drain at 25k like reccomended and the fluid was pretty burned. I was quit surprised. Ive done many cars in the past and this fluid was in much worse condition. I would say his driving is pretty normal. He said his temp never went above 190 deg. We flushed everything out (Tranny and Converter)and switched to the Trandsnd. After seeing his I think I'll do mine at 20k. The deep pan might not be a bad idea at all either.

This issue is really dependent on use. If you are hualing big loads 50% or more of the time, then yeah, a more frequent change would be good.
If your buddy doesn't work is tranny this way and you had burned smelling fluid then something may be going on.
Actually at 25K unless you have more than stock power you shouldn't have burned fluids. make sure filters are being changed and levels are being checked. It wouldn't be the first time that the factory didn't fill a unit to the right level.
BigAl advised to change the Allison spin on filter at 5K miles. An ATF drain/refill was not required at this interval, only add enough ATF to make up for the loss during the filter change.
Here is the ALLISON TRANSMISSION SERVICE TIP (http://www.allisontransmission.com/documents/product/1099B.pdf) with the recommendation for the 1000 Series 5K spin on filter change (see page 2).
Allison Transmission requires the following initial filter change intervals:
1000/2000/2400 Series Spin-On Control Main Filter 5000 miles (8000 km)
GM chose not to include this 5K spin on change in the maintenance schedule...

Did the 5,000 mile filter change and have just hit 25,000 miles. I drive much the same as your buddy so will let you know what the fluid looks like. Unfortunely only have about 2,000 miles of med towing (6,000 lbs)-- couldn't get out at all due to school last year. I check the fluid once in a while and it still looks and smells clean.

I did a full flush using transynd at 30k miles and the original fluid looked and smelled fine. I also changed the tranny filter at 1k, 5k, 15k, and 30k.

I flushed and changed to Transynd at 25k, and added deep pan, and fluid was like new. Truck has no power mods, is driven 70 miles daily, and tows a 10k 5'er on weekends. I don't drive it like I stole it, more like borrowed without permission. Have seen some tranny temp readings on factory gauge just over 200 when stuck in traffic on hot days. I've changed spin on at 5k, then every 7k (oil change) after that. I'd keep an eye on it - sounds a little worrisome.

Any suggestions on the filter brand and type. Where can they be purchased and how much fluid would have to be replaced with just a filter change?

Eric, I don't get it? Changing "just the spin-on @ 25k? I changed the spin & pan filter on mine @ 23k. The bad/funny part was taking the pan filter out.....Oh Boy does it hold some fluid! I would swear that a little green grimmel was there ready to pour some D-III on my head! After the two filters when in/on I added 8 quarts. :rolleyes:

I guess I was way overdue :eek: I just changed mine at 50,000 put in redline high temp, much nicer shifts now. :D
