Investigating the possibility of purchasing a 2003 Crew Cab 2500HD D/A. Exactly what transfer case is the 2500HD using.

New Venture Gear Transfer Case Ratings

Both Ford and Dodge are using the NV 271/273 in their trucks.

Trying to compare "Apples to Apples."

Thank you,
Michael

261SHD manual shift, or 263SHD pushbutton. Unless they went to Borg Warner as in some other GM applications.

Why has GM placed a transfer case in their HD trucks that is only rated at (NV263 HD) 5,430 ft. Lbs and 10,000 GVW or (NV263 SHD) 5,677 ft. Lbs and 12,000 GVW when both of the competitors are using NV271 (7,890 ft. Lbs and 17,500 GVW) and the NV273 (7,890 ft Lbs and 17,500 GVW).

Thank You,
Michael

Good question. I wanted to know the same thing when I was researching my new truck purchase. At the time 2003 Dodge specs weren't out yet and the 2002 Dodges 2500 and up used the 241 or optional 241HD. I just firgured Ford used the 271 because of the F450/550. Now for 2003 Dodge is also using the 271 and they don't have a 4x4 bigger than 3500. I wonder what will be in the GM 4500/5500 4x4s.

The build sheet on my 02 says NP1. I don't see that on your listing ~

oyazi, NP1 is a GM RPO code that stands for:

Transfer case, electric shift, two speed

In your case, that means the NVG263. The RPO code is not the same thing as a model number for the option.

Black Dog ~ thats for the response ~ I know the NV263 is used on the 03's but the thot the 02s were different?
Could you or anyone clarifiy the diffs between HD and SHD used in the designation?
Thanks again

ON EDIT:

I've included the following partial listing posted by Dmaxer from another board. Hope no body minds.
If I interpret it correctly, prior to the 03 model yr, our transfer cases are the same as used in the S-10's. Hope I'm wrong ~

As I said before, the RPO code does not designate the model number of the (in this case) transfer case that is used. It only designates that your truck has a 2 speed electric shift transfer case. The actual model transfer case used (NVG231, NVG241, NVG261 etc.) is different for the same RPO depending on the vehicle model.
