I am looking at buying either a 1500HD or 2500HD Crew Cab truck. Both trucks are 2003 with similar mileage. Can someone tell me what the difference is between these two trucks?

I have noted that both trucks are 6.0L, both have the same axles, wheels, tires, etc. Both trucks seem to have the same tow rating as well. I don't see any difference between the 1500HD and the 2500HD other than the front hood etc. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

I'm not certain but I thought the 1500HD does not have the full-floating rear diff. My 03 2500HD D/A has the full floater and is rated for 9200GVW. One of my co-workers has an 03 1500HD with the 6.0/4L80E and the body/frame "looks" identical to my 03 2500HD.

The 1500HD is a 2500 crew cab (non HD), with a different badge.

The differences are, 1500HD/2500HD:

GVWR: 8600/9200
Rear axle: Same, 10.5" full floater. There is also no longer a "LD" 7200 GVWR 2500, only an 8600 GVWR 2500, and 9200 GVWR 2500HD.
Powertrain: Same.
Brakes: not sure, probably the same, being the same axle.
Frame: Different. Rear channels of the 2500HD are twice the size.
Ride height (stock): 2500HD has a body lift to accomodate the Allison tranny, 1500HD does not, and is about 2" lower.
4 X 4: 1500HD has available Autotrac, 2500HD does not. 2500HD has manual shift, or electric push button shift.
Tow ratings: Similar, limited by the same powertrain.
Suspension: 2500HD has higher rated rear capacity, with more/heavier rear leaf. Front torsion bars are also rated higher.

There are other slight differences, but I think this is what you were after. Most of the capacities are determined by the powertrain, which in this case, is the same between them. My data comes from an actual side-by-side comparison, using my '01 2500HD, and uncle's 2003 1500HD. We put them under a microscope, wondering the same as you.

1500HD has option for 3.73 rear axle or 4.10. 2500HD with 6.0 only available with 4.10.

Thanks for the information.

Can I assume that the 1500HD will ride a little better than the 2500HD?

I am guessing that if they have the same tow rating, I might go for the better ride. I would tow about 9,000 lbs but it would only tow a couple of times per year.

There was no difference in ride that I could tell. Certainly no reason to choose one over the other.

Under your situation, it may be better to go with the 1500HD. If for no other reason, the DMV fees will be less. If it has 3.73 gears, the mileage may be better as well.

I've driven both and it really is hard to tell any difference. The 1500HD is likely to get somewhat better fuel mileage because of body height and available 3.73 ratio.
