My tranny started whining recently and today got worse. The noise is very audible and seems to affect the power, maybe because it takes awhile to upshift. The temp. gauge stayed at about 200 all day. Any thoughts or ideas of what might be wrong? Thanks

dl537,

Are you sure it is not your clutch fan kicking in for added cooling. With the warmer weather, it seems to be a common annoyance amongst other posters, including myself. And it DOES rob power when running. :( Someone else tonight on the Duramax 6600 thread was saying the same thing. I checked with my local stealer and they, unfortunately, told me this was normal. Yeah right! I have never seen another engine that kicks the fan so much as this one does on a whim.

dl537,
I believe I just had the same problem with my trans. It had a very loud whine that remained as it would shift through all gears. It was loudest in the lower gears. I took it to the dealer and they replaced it with no questions asked. I was impressed with the dealer. The day after I picked it up it would not start. So back to dealer, turns out it was the crank position sensor. I hope the truck problems are now over with.

Almost 28k on my truck and the Allison is starting to whine. Anyone know if there are any GM bullitens on this issue? I have an '01 that I bought in May of 2001. Should I expect complete trans. failure soon?

Mine whines louder in the winter. Some whine is normal. It's the sound of the hydraulic pump. They made some changes on the 02's to make them a little quieter.

I've only noticed the whining noise when I'm
using tow/haul mode.

Ya know my truck doesn't have that whine, but my old truck had it for a while. (I do not have a wife, the whine in my old truck went away about the same time as she did)

Allison Transmissions have gear Noise, It's the way they are built.
Wives whine by Nature it's the way they are built.

As far as the Fan noise, My 400 cummins does the same thing, I think it's kind a Cool .. Macho sort of thing...... :D

Whining can be good.My wife whines when she wants something(if you know what I mean)and I like it.
I don't get quite as excited about the tranny whine but I like it too!
