I've got about 11,000 miles on my 2002' 2500HD D/A and haven't changed the diff. fluids yet. I'm reading all over the place that guys are doing it at 500-1,000 miles. How bad is it to have waited this long?

Thanks,
Shane :(

While virtually everyone will probably suggest to get that diff. fluid changed ASAP, you should be OK. They do come from the factory with synthetic in the differential.

Changed the fluid this weekend and bad news - many little pieces of metal, about 1/16 square shavings attached to the magnet. This can't be good?? Rear end seems to be functioning properly. Doesn't lock as hard as my 00', but does lock up. Any thoughts on the metal flakes?

A lot of it has to do with compulsive behaviors :D or from those who use there truck real hard.

Actually, I'm one of the former -- I went with Amsoil in the rear diff at 3K. Too early to tell if it makes any difference, but it can't hurt. And I wouldn't worry too much; 11K is not a lot of miles, and unless 10K of it was pulling huge trailers, you should be fine.
