Hey all,

Ok.. I'm done dragging the bottom of my '02 2500 4x4 Dmax on every ant hill on the mountain.. enough already... I'm even afraid to look under there and see what all I've torn up... And I'm pretty sure I've done at least SOME damage...

THESE TRUCKS are TOO LOW.

So.. I need some recommendations on going to a taller tire and getting this thing up outta the way.. before I destroy it...

I'm not interested in necessarily much wider tires.. but taller for sure... and definitely cranking the torsion bars some...

Give me some ideas .. PLEASE !

My 265 Michelins LTX M/S's are nice, but they might not be big enough for you.

Late in 2002 Michelin was supposed to come out with a D load range LTX M/S 285-75R16D. Yes D load range, but its capacity is greater than the stock E load range Firestones. (3300lbs vs 3100lbs if I remember right)

The 265's are about an inch taller and the 285's are about 2 inches taller.

Good luck!

Thanks DMAX Daddy,

Did you have to alter the torsion bars at all to get the 265 under there ??

BTW, great looking truck !!

If I could get mine close to my previous F**d PSD.. that would be just fine...

Thanks again,

WayCoolKennel I put 285's M/T's on my truck and tweeked the t-bars and it has helped alot to get the frame up off the ground, hopefully in 04 they will fix that part of the frame.

Cool thanks Pullinpwr... !

Thats a wicked nice bumper ! Where'd you get that ?? $$??

In your pics is Alli-max's truck stock height ?? Yours looks quite a big taller in the pics... OOPS I just noticed the pics you have show A/T's not M/T's...

I think the 285's will get me where I need to be...

THANKS !

WayCoolKennel,I put some m/t's on the truck not long after a few of those pics,I think Alli-max had 265's on his truck. He is the one that hooked me up on the bumper. Just remember that mementum is the key in deep mud and ruts, bang your way threw :D

I just went thru the same thing with tires last week. I wanted something taller & more aggressive but didn't want to go so big that I would have warranty issues. I went to the dealership & they put the scanner on my truck to find out what tire size they could reprogram the speedometer for. There were about 3-4 options, but a couple were really odd sizes. The tire dealer suggested staying away from those because they would be hard to find if I ever had problems while traveling & needed a replacement. So, I chose a BF Goodrich 265 75R 16 KO all terrain tire. It's a great tire but the load range is D which is OK since I won't be pulling much.

I really am having a hard time trying to figure out how much air pressure to run in them. Also, even after the speedometer reprogram, it's still about 2.5 mph off per my GPS.

Hope that helps some.

Hi WayCool:

I've got 285's on my CC now, but they just aren't holding tread as well as I'd hoped (hmmmmm...must be the Hot Juice! ;) ), so I'll probably go with a bit taller 295 next go-round, which looks to be sooner than later!

Nice GSP's, by the way...used to run English Pointers and GSP's on birds down in South Texas.

WayCoolKennel,

Since you mentioned going taller without much wider, consider a 255/85. There aren't quite as many choices availble in that size compared to a 285/75. Dunlop, BF Goodrich, Cooper and Kelly have some of their tires available in that size. Most makers list the 255's as about a half inch taller than the 285. I just put a set of 255/85 Trxus MT's on my factory wheels today. A friend also put the same tire in a 285/75 on his truck a little while ago. Unmounted, standing side by side, the 255 is about 1/2 inch taller. Comparing them on the trucks, the only noticeable difference is the 285 looks wider.

Some have said that a 285 is too wide for a stock rim, that it will crown and wear out faster. But a lot of people have them and I haven't heard many complaints. I stuck with the 255 to avoid any potential problems. If my friend's tires last wear as long as mine I may go with that size for my next set.

I put BFGs mt 285-75-16 on centerline 16x8 rims on My 2001 Dmax 4x4. Had to crank the T-bars about 5 turns or so, I love the way it looks. In the future I plan on puting a Rancho 4" lift with 305-70-16. No rubing at all. Good luck bill

Way Cool,
I didnt have to crank the T-Bars for the 265's but I did anyway to level the truck a bit.

The reason I didnt go for 285's is the Michein dealer wouldnt warranty the tires on the stock rims(too narrow) and I couldnt afford tires and rims. Still saving for my Juice/Powerloader!

SWLA,

Do you have any pics with your 255's on your truck? I want to get the same thing next year when my poor ole stock Firestones bite it at about 10000 miles... ;)

Hey WAYcool,I've got 285 BFG All Terrain TA's mounted on Eagle wheels for summer driving and another siped set the same size on my stock rims for the winter.
My tire dealer tells me its not a problem running the BFG's on the stock rims and has seen no strange wear or other ill effects from doing so.
He does say that some brands don't do as well running less than the recommended wheel width but the BFG's have been flawless.
He's done a lot of these in the 20+ years he has been in business.
I run 50 psi in all 4 tires and Rancho 9000X shocks set on level 2.
More air and increased shock settings as load requires.
Hope this helps. Blake

Conradv,

I recently bought a digital camera, but it killed my computer when I hooked it to my USB port. Spent several hours on the phone with Dell tech support, but they've been unable to come up with a fix. Computer works fine as long as nothing is plugged into a USB port, even devices that worked fine prior to the camera. Dell says I'll have to reload Windows XP! :(

Anyway, as soon as I get the computer issue resolved I'll post some pics.

I cranked the tbars and put on 285/75's (using the stock rims). I gained about 2" of height, which really isn't much. If you want to go higher you'll need to think about a lift instead.

2K2AD,

The problem is resolved, but I haven't taken any pictures. If the weather clears this weekend I'll do it. I registered for a picture trail acct. If that doesn't work I can Email them to you.

Bill McGouirk- A 305/70 is slightly shorter than a 285/75.

305 x .70 = 213.50
285 x .75 = 213.75

It's very little but your post seems like you may think they are bigger.

I just put a set of Dunlop Radial Rover RV 255/85-16's on my Duramax!! They look real good - not sure how they will wear compared to the Michelin LTX AT's that I took off but time will tell - I'll take some pics this afternoon and post them somewhere or I can email them to you!!! :D

I went to SAM's yesterday, with 26k on my OEM Firestones almost slick on the rears, and had these BFG's put on also. There was some question weither SAMs was allowed to put these on this vehicle with a load range change from E to D.

They did and now I've got these 265's on all 4's.
I don't think there is any rubbing going on with the fronts.

Is there something in the OM for adjusting the T-bars? Pretty simple operation?

thanks
gary

Duck,

I may be wrong, but I think that the dealer adjusts the anti-lock on the brakes thinking their adjusting the speedometer. That is what I've heard and seen.
