Is there a difference in the pump timing gear sets? I think I remember someone saying that the early 6.5 sets were different from the 6.2's and the red engines having a different set also.

DSG produces two different sets of "dual-idler gear drive timing sets".

One set is for an engine produced from 1982-1993, and the Phaser gear drive for the electronic engines produced 1994 or newer.

The difference is the addition of a reluctor wheel on the face of the crank gear for the CKP (Crankshaft Position) sensor.

The snout on the harmonic damper was made shorter for the electronic engines to compensate for the reluctor wheel thickness.

Otherwise, the two gear sets are the same.

what about the gear that bolts to the top timing gear at the cam and the one that bolts to the injector pump are they the same among all of these engines?

As far as I know, the factory original two top gears used to drive the fuel injection pump are all the same.
