Last week started truck and drove away never shifted out of 3rd also jumped when started and stoped, service enging light came on then truck went to dealer for the first time code PO708 showed up they said I needed a new switch because water corroded it the trans technician said the spray from the front tire is in direct line with the switch they installed new switch and reprogramed controller I asked if new switch was different they said no and there was a good chance it would do it again . And guess what they said it was not under waranty and it cost $512.00 to fix

Welcome to the forums!

Sorry to hear of your experience. You'll really hate what has to be said about it. That switch can be had for less than $50 from an Allison dealer, and takes less than 30 minutes to install with no special tools. Even if it's out of warranty, go back to the dealer and pitch a fit. It is a known issue, and they should fix it. If you have the tan switch, then it's the latest one, which is supposed to be better according to Allison. If your switch is black, it is the older one, and the dealer ripped you off by selling you old, inferior stock. $512 is a rip off in any case. The dealer sells the switch for around $100, and it takes them less than 1/2 hour labor to replace it. A realistic dealer repair should be less than $200, including diagnostic and programming.

Search the posts for "NSBU" and you'll get lots of info on it.

I have the EXACT problem. Will be dropping off at the dealer Mon.
Is there a chance this is something a person can install ones self?
If not I will post what goes on at the dealership.

yeah it's real easy, here the procedure:

Disconnect the external wiring harness from the PNP switch.
Disconnect the shift linkage/cable from the shift lever on the selector shaft.
Use wrench to prevent the shift lever from rotating. Remove nut from the end of the selector shaft. Carefully remove the shift lever from selector shaft.
Remove the two bolts. Remove the PNP switch by sliding it outward over the selector shaft.
Important: If the park/neutral position switch did not easily slide off the selector shaft, use a file to remove any burrs or raised metal where the selector lever was seated against the shoulder of the selector shaft.

and to install:

Be sure that the neutral assurance bracket is in the proper position on PNP switch.
Make sure the selector shaft is in the N (Neutral) position as follows:
- Place a wrench on the selector shaft flats and rotate the shaft to its furthest clockwise position.

- Rotate the selector shaft counter-clockwise two detents.
Align the PNP switch with the main housing so that the neutral assurance bracket is facing outward.
While maintaining the correct PNP switch-to-selector-shaft alignment, slide the new PNP switch over the selector shaft.
While holding the neutral assurance bracket in engagement with the PNP switch, install the two bolts so that the PNP switch may be rotated with some effort.

Tighten
Tighten the two bolts to 27 N

NSBU switch is covered under the emissions warranty up to 7/70 IIRC. Its only covered that long on the diesels. Have your dealer look in the P&P manual...Its there.

Thanks for the info guys, would be great if it would be covered under warranty.
Say I have the "edge" installed on the truck, should I remove it before bring it in? I don't have any gauges installed. So that won't be a give-a-way. Never push the truck hard, just like the little extra punch getting on the freeway from time to time.
Later, Al

Later, Al You bet! Take the box off. Your current issue has nothing to do with it, but you may have an issue later, and the dealer might remember you had it on there (or make a little note in your service file). They can be quite anal about such things, and deny warranty claims because of it, even if the box didn't cause it.

Scuba, dont know of any website detailing it, other then what I have read myself in the P&P manual. I was in the dealer for more then 10 years and we had constant access to it.

the federal emissons warr. is actually good to 8yr/80K. Your dealer can look on dealerworld for a list of wahts covered and what ain't. It's a rather extensive list but is to the point as to what is covered and for how long.

Emission Defect Warranty
General Motors Corporation warrants to the owner that the vehicle:

Man Al, have you priced one of these switches @ an Allison dealer? it'd make you sick. About $60 for the switch and about 1/2 hr labor to do it yourself.
