Went up to the bulk dealer yesterday to buy 6 gals. of Delvac 1. While there the dealer suggested I try Chevron Delo 400 5w40 full synthetic. It was $50.00 (CDN) cheaper than the Delvac 1 and according to the dealer just as good a product. I have never seen Delo 400 mentioned on the DP and would be interested in any feedback from any who have used it. THX.

Delo 400 15W-40 is an excellent product and I use it myself. It is not synthetic, however. Some people at first glance think it is because it has a label on the jug that says "Iso-Syn." Iso-Syn is just a base stock that they claim has a lot of the properties of synthetic bases. But the oil itself is good old fashioned dino unless there is something new out there that I haven't seen. If so I doubt they would also call it "Delo 400."
Oops, on re-read I just noticed you said "5W-40" and not 15W-40. Is this something new? Anyone?
Okay, just went to Chevron website and there is indeed a 5W-40 full synthetic Delo 400. Well, shut mah mouth! Guess I've been working to much. I need to pay more attention to what's going on out there.

Most of the synthetics(Delvac1, Rotella Synth, etc.) are 5w40. This wide of a viscosity spread can be achieved with synthetics and not with most dino's. Amsoil does make a 15w40 synthetic, I believe that it is labeled as marine/ diesel.
I have used the Amsoil and am currently using the Rotella Synthetic from Wally World for around $13 a gallon.

Just reading the label off the jug "Delo 400 sae 5w40 Synthetic". No indication that its a jazzed up dino.

John (Indigo), does the Shell "synthetic"'s foul odor ever go away? When I ran Delo 400 15w-40, I'd have odor for about 200 miles. With the Rotella 5w-40 I've got just over 800 miles on the change, and it friggin reeks... Just curious.
Kidz, Delvac 1 is a great product, probably the best on the market. If Chevron's 5w-40 is as good as the 15w-40, you shouldn't have any problem. I'd run the Delo 5w-40 if I could find it.
Just a note- "synthetic" oils aren't always synthetic. Delvac 1 is a FULL synthetic, but Shell ROtella is a "hydrocracked" dino oil, but under law it can be called a synthetic, since it's a dino oil, it can be sold cheaper. I'm not sure if Chevron 5w-40 is a full or pseudo-synthetic.

kidsi;
Chevron Delo 400 is good oil. I haven't used the 5W-40 yet because I have been rotating between Shell Rotella T and Petro Can Duron. Speaking of PetroCan Duron it too is now available in a 5W-40 sysnthetic.
Are you doing oil analyses? Try it and see how it works. Maybe that -11 to -13 will return and you can truly test it. I realize today's temp of +11 doesn't represent winter temperatures.

Driverguy:I'll have an oil analysis done at next change. Just finsihed front to back synthetic. Will do the tranny in the spring. Mild here today so glad I was able to get it done because we know the -30 stuff won't be far away.
Kidzinheritanz,
Just wondering what you had to pay for your 5-40 synthetic at the bulk dealers?
I use 0-40 synthetic that I bought at CO-OP for around $4.00/litre.

I don't no much but I'm learning.
The oil container must have written on it---CH-4--- otherwise you don't use it in the Duramax.
I'm open to correction on this point, the oil just mentioned----0-40---- is missing a ----W----and a first low viscosity value, meaning there are not any addatives in that oil and only an oil weight of ----40----, indicating it cant be use in cold weather.
Fire away.
good luck

Mowser, Letsgo,
Paid $101.35 for 6 Gals.(US) wihich is 22.74 liters. Works out to $4.40 a liter. He wanted $156.00 for the Delvac 1. First thing I checked was to make sure it complied with the CH4 standard. Apparently this is a relatively new product for Chevron and it would seem that there other oil companies coming out with full synthetic oils. Good for us!!!!

SoMn, I think the smell went away within 1000 mi. I remember reading here about the cracked dino/ synthetic thing. I am not really extending my change interval and I figure it has to be better than running regular dino.

Thanks, John. I'm not extending my intervals either, I'll keep to the 4000ish mile interval I've been running since the truck was new. The 5w-40 will make winter starting much easier on the engine. I may switch to Delvac 1 at the next change if I can find it for a reasonable price locally. Otherwise, I'll order from Av Lube. Undecided at this point.
letsgo,
Sorry about that, I forgot to add the W, It's actually SAE 0W-40 and meets API CH-4 CG-4 CF-4 CF/SJ,SH. It's called CO-OP Advanced Formula D-MO SL 100% Synthetic.
