I called a local GM dealer. I was told if there is power to the brake controller with ignition off you don't need the fuse. I also did a search and there are mixed opinions. I towed a trailer without the fuse and no problems. Does anyone know for sure?

The 40 amp fuse that is attached to the brake control harness (before install) is for the trailer/camper charging circuit, not the brake circuit. The trailer brakes will work irregardless of ign. switch position. The charging circuit is not switched, either. It will be hot with ign. on or off. Hope this makes sense.

Sorry to change the subject a bit, but.........
On my 99 the charge wire was only "hot" when the truck was running, IMO this was much better as I now unplug the trailer when setting to keep from running down the truck battery.
Guess I'll have to install a relay if I want this same feature on the new trucks.
