roof marker lamps

Has anyone installed the factory roof marker lamps? I have all the parts, but not the dimensions. Does anyone know of a template, or where the dimensions could be found? I can only afford to drill my roof once! Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Expensive! At least when compared to a factory option of like $55. I paid around $240. I know the outboard lamps were $55 each, and the center was $55. The harness was like $30. I'm looking at my receipt and I think I was charged wrong for the center lamp - seems odd it would be the same as the outboard lamps.

I was planning on installing myself, but I need the dimensions. Not only that, but the mounting holes have to be square! Drill 'em and file 'em, I guess. Needless to say, I want the proper locations. Still waiting for my service manual to see if it offers any help. My MOPAR service manual has dimensions for the Dodge, so I'm hoping.

I will be installing them on my truck next week. My friend has the 3500HD, so we can use his as a reference.I can post measurements later. I do know that GM cut a 7/8" hole for the harness at each light & no grommet. I would like to know what the bulliten says about the leaking problem. If anyone knows what part of the light has the leaking problem, please let us know.

CALIMAX, the TSB on the leak was posted on this list around mid-December, as I recall. I had already had mine into the shop for the warranty work on the leak. Mine only leaked at the center marker light, and the repair stopped the leak. The TSB outlined how to install a new gasket on the center marker lamp.

tysmith and CALIMAX, if a digital close-up photo of the lamp(s) would help with your installation, let me know and I will post one on my site.

You can kind of tell where they should go by the curvature of the rubber gasket. A pic or two might be helpful, especially if a tape measure was held up. All the guys I know don't have 'em, so a long distance look might be helpful.
Anyone with pics of the actual install would help us out as well. Thanks for the info Calimax & White Knight. I will follow this string through to the end to help anyone else who dares try.
Calimax - how are you going to make the holes for the mounting screws square? Or am I not understanding how they mount? All I have is parts, no directions, so...
But who needs directions?

tysmith, took some measurements and two shots of marker lamps. Pics are posted at: http://www.picturetrail.com/airstream12557 under the album Roof Marker Lamps.

I couldn't do any good getting a tape measure in the photos, so I took some measurements. Measurements surprised me in that the lamps are almost symetrical. ;)

On driver and passenger side, it is 4 1/4 inches from near edge of black rubber door rubber gasket to the near edge (side) of the roof marker lamp gasket.

Driver side is 4 1/16 inches and passenger side is 4 3/16 from near edge of black rubber windshield gasket to front edge of the roof marker lamp gasket. These measurements are to the outside roof marker lamps.

It is 3 1/8 from near edge of black rubber windhield gasket to near edge of the center roof marker lamp gasket.

tysmith, The measurements I have are slightly different than white knight but real close. I'm not sure if we will drill a hole & file or use a nutsert & stainless stell screw. The nutsert is the most efficient if you have the installation tool.

Completed the install and they make a HUGE difference in the look of the truck. I LIKE EM! We took the measurements off my buddys 3500HD. The hardest part was the twist of the two outside lights so we did the old eyeball to see what looked best. We ended up drilling & fileing to get the square hole. We made the clips fit just snug. The wiring harness runs down the passenger side piller & plugs directly into a connector block behind the removeable cover on the right side of the dash. I also installed the light below the tailgate, turns out that my friends was off center by 3/8". You need to replace one harness (for the license plate lights) and splice or change the connector. I don't want to bore anybody else so if you want more details I can e-mail you with head liner removal.

^.........Cal, I'd like the additional details, in particular, about the headliner removal. I'm fixing to install a clothes hanger rack inside my rear passenger compartment and need to get inside the liner area. How much time did you spend on the lights? A half day, whole day, full weekend??

It's intersting how when these trucks first were first displayed to us before they went on sale, so many commented on the ugly clearance lights.

I felt that way a little early on but wanted them anyway.

Now that they have been out for a year or so, they look great. Another one of those things where time changes ones view of things.

I like the style. It's different.

Started the project at noon & finished at 5:30pm. That includes dealing with walk-in customers & phone calls (wasted about 1-1/2 hors). Head liner removal was not as bad as everyone told me & this was my first time. Here is how I did mine (I have a LT): remove phillips from front of overhead counsel, pull down couple of inches & pull forward slightly, disconnect two wire harnesses, one for lights & one for onstar speaker. Remove rear overhead light by inserting small flat blade screw driver in slot & pull down, light will slide right out. Remove both visors & holder brackets using a TORX screw driver. Remove overhead grab bar at front pass seat by inserting a small to medium straight blade screw driver & pull clips straight down (no need to pull clips all the way out). pull bar down untill you feel that it is free. Next remove front pillar trims then side trims between the doors, you will need to remove both rear grab bars (10mm shallow 3/8 drive), fold down rear seats & remove panel below rear window, next remove rear corner trims by removing two phillips screws in corner below rear window, pull out top clip first then use a long flat blade screw driver to POP middle clip. Make sure there is no obstructions & GENTLY pull down head liner from front to back. I started to pull at the opening for the overhead counsel. it will sound like velcro pulling apart. I only pulled mine down far enough to work (about 10 inches), total time took about 1/2 hour.

just had my headliner out, but decided to wait on the drilling so i put it back in. all the posts have been very helpful. thanks. the only other question i have is do the square plastic clips go in from the inside out, or do they go on from outside and rely on just the metal clip? It seems that they should go in from the inside. Oh, the wiring harness goes down the passenger a-pillar? interesting. again, thanks for all of the help.

The clips go in from the out side & expand when you install the screw. We drilled a 3/8" hole & used a rubber grommet for each light wireing harness.I also used a adhesive/sealant (E6100) at each hole before the final install of each light. It's a good idea to test fit everything first.

I also removed the grey mounting clips on the wiring harness (nowhere to plug them into since existing harness used the holes) and tie wrapped it to the existing harness going down the pass "A" pillar. I did not want to take the chance of having one of those clips puncture the head liner or wear into the harness.. Always trying to think ahead !!

I went to dealer and measured for placement. Will install them when it gets warmer here.

Do you got the web address page for those lights from JC? I can only find the the style like on my 96' dually. Did it come with the harness also or did you have to get it from the dealer? Where does it plug or tap into? Someone said it runs down the passenger pilar? Thanks.

I could not find the part number on the J.C. website. I ordered thru the catalog #671J-02.
The part number is: 49U**495U ($64.99)
Description: Chevy Heavy Duty (3-light cluster w/2 cab lights)
It did not come with a harness. The lights are grounded thru the hold down screws in the lights.
All you need to do is run a single hot wire to the lights. I also heard that it goes down the passenger pillar. I will know when warmer WX gets here (5 degrees and 2 feet snow fell in last 2 days)!

I beleive they are around the $60-70 range and come with the harness.
