Does anyone know where the GPS reciever is on a 2001 Chevy Crew Cab LB Duramax Truck?

Thanks

By the way, GM calls it the Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU).

Sheldon, according to my Helms Service Manual, the Vehicle Interface Unit is under the passenger side dash, but up high against the firewall and behind the airbag. Doesn't look like a nice item to try and access.

If it's the same as on the 2003 you have to remove the dashboard top panel to get to it. Before removing the top panel, you need to pull the plastic moldings on the windshield pillars. The unit must be removed attached to its brackets. The bottom screws for the brackets can be accessed by unlatching and dropping the glove box, through which the cable connectors are also accessed. It takes a few hours the first time, much faster after doing it once. The think the biggest risk is breaking one of the $$$ plastic parts.

Hi Stoner,

That is exactly why I wanted to know where the GPS unit is.

Now, I just have to get some help and try to do what the web site says so I can connect my laptop to it. But it seems to be a fair amount of work to get to the GPS unit and I am not sure if I want to remove the dash, etc.

Sheldon, Stoner and others

THANK YOU!

I have a use for this information and I had not been able to find it. I have know that there was a GPS receiver in my vehicle but I was told that there was no way to get the data in a NEMA format. One more project to add to the list of things to do.
Now I will be able to remove the GPS unit that I use to feed data to the APRS tracker.
