Hi Guys !
I have had the driveline clunk in this truck since it was new....Every 3-5,000 miles they have lubed the driveline splines and the clunk goes away. They have replaced the yoke and the clunk still comes back at 3-5,00 miles. The truck just went out of the 36,000 mile warrenty and the clunk has returned !! A teflon based marine lube was used last time in effort to cure this but, it was no better...Any ideas would be appreciated !!

how/when does it do it?

The clunk appears upon coming to a stop (ie. stop light) and releasing the brake to go. The more aggresive the stop, the louder the clunk on brake release. A similar condtion exists in the light duty trucks and the cure is a nickle plated slip yoke....This part is not avaliable for the HD series....

My truck just started exhibiting the same symptoms, now with 36,000 miles. I still have the original 2-piece rear driveline because this truck never had the driveline shudder some of the '01 & '02 trucks had.

I'll pull the rear driveline apart before long to re-lube the splined slip-yoke.

For those with a one-piece rear driveline, has anyone experimented with synthetic ATF in the transfer case, as a possible cure?

Before the nickle plated yoke came along. We used to (and still do) flush the t=case fluid and refill it with autotrak II fluid. This is a synthetic stock which is designed to work with the clutch pack, its also a pretty solid defense to the slip/stick of the yoke. One might try that out as well. I know of many trucks with synthetic fluid (amsoil, transynd, mobil 1 )in the t-case and some do it, and some dont.

My transfer case is filed with a syn. fluid...Is there another type of lube you would recommend for the slip yoke....If I could even get 10,000 miles before having to lube the slip yoke I would be happy. But every 3,000 miles is ridiculous !!

I guys !
I took the truck back to the dealer today and they tried something new...First they loosened the motor mount and transfer case mount and drove the truck over a gravel road, then they tightened the bolts in an effort to correct a possible mis- alignment of the transfer case output shaft, and the driveline. The driveshaft slip shaft was bone dry so they relubed it with marine teflon grease. They changed the transfer case fluid and replaced it with GM syn. (blue in color)The truck is again smooth without the driveline clunk.
The tech also found both rear axle seals leaking again, so they replaced them under warranty.
