View Full Version : Clutch fan vs dual ele fan
Hello all, I have a question to you all. I have a 6.5L 1995 MFI. My vehicle weights 11,000 pounds. I want to keep my temp needle right at 195 degrees. Would an electric dual fan from "Flex-a-lite" that is thermo controlled, and varible speed control from 60%-100%. Dyno tests show a 17 hp and a 20 ftlb gain. Or.. the Kennedy clutch and steel fan blade... I would like your options on both.

This topic has been discussed a million times, a mechanical fan will flow 3x the air a $500 electric fan will. I believe I have read something like 15,000CFM from a 6.5 at 3000RPM.
If you are having problems keeping your temps in check try a Duramax fan and special clutch that Kennedy sells, ass-u-ming your cooling system is functioning properly.
However, if you never towed, the electrics would probably work fine and maybe save you a bit of power.
I have made the choice of going with the 20" steel fan and kennedy clutch... I was told that the duramax plastic fan flexes...

Good choice.
Consider how much air you can move with 17 hp vs. what you can move with a couple of electric 12v fans...
(Hint: it takes roughly 900 amps at 14 volts to generate 17 hp)
Also, consider that the mechanical fan always moves some air, even when the clutch is not engaged, so your oil cooler, trans cooler and air conditioner still function even though the radiator is not up to temperature.
I used the Duramax fan on my truck and aside from some mods to the shroud to make it fit, it seems to work great. It is a lot quieter than the steel fan and keeps the truck cool (with the assistance of the 97 cooling mods). No problem with flexing of the fan at all.

Many have tried.
Most have failed.
None have been happy.
