Just noticed it in the past week. It's a squishy squeaky sound. Sound doesn't change when you hit the brakes. I saw no visible leaks from the T-case back. It appears to be coming from the rear, only in reverse, 1-4 mph after 5 mph it seems to stop. If the rear axle leaked you would see oil seeping from underneath the truck right? Any suggestions? Hopefully, not a bearing gone south.... :(

Should add that it's on a flat smooth driveway, so doesn't that leave out the springs?

If you can duplicate the issue, try applying the E-brake slowly when it happens. If it goes away, or gets louder, a shoe is probably dragging, or you have a pebble in there somewhere. Early in 2001, there was a bulletin regarding E-brake dragging, causing a similar noise. The GM remedy for this was to back off the E-brake adjustment until it stopped, which usually resulted in nearly no E-brake. Another side effect of the problem is a hot hub.

In case you didn't know....
The E-brake is a separate mechanism within the rear brake rotor. It is called "drum in hat", which is exactly what it implies (insert mental image). Inside the rotor is a drum surface, and the friction surfaces, or shoes, are similar to the old drum brakes.

I tried that on Wed. to no avail. I still think that is related to the brakes, just need someone to operate the truck so I can get a little closer to the sound

Just thought of another possibility. Check the rotor in the area of the noise. It could be warped, causing the caliper to rock. Remove the wheel and spin the hub by hand. If the rotor is warped enough to cause the noise, you will see the caliper "walking" back and forth. The noise can be caused by the wear adjusters, which are rubber bushings.

Rare, but it happens.

You nailed it Denny ;) Pulled the drive shaft today and the needle bearing cap was dry and full of rusty powder. All is better now  , I replaced both u-joints with Neapco greaseable u-joints....
