sounds like you might have got a bad one. i also had an 02 and upgraded to an 05. the biggest difference i noticed with the LLY is that it seems alot more high strung. also louder under load, but mileage is way better, especially after programmer smile.gif plus, to me, there is no comparison in power. or, maybe i just got a good one tongue.gif

Without heavy load 'o5 is faster. For me the most interesting feature was grade braking: I hoped that this will work better with new turbo but it may not.
Also programmer does not help with long grades and heavy load.

I'm sorry if i sounded rude. i, personally have had bad vehicles and seen others with great ones that were just like mine. I realize that the programmers do not help with heavy loads but do make difference unloaded with mpg. I was just saying that my 05 lly is much better than my 02 lb7. 15-20% better whether unloaded or towing my app. 10000 lb trailer power or mpg wise. again, sorry if i sounded rude

It is ok. I did not try to complain about LLY: I just wanted provide some information to the people that pull heavy load.

Just changed break in oil at 600 miles with Delo 400 and oil filter to Mobil 1 and saw a increase in MPG. I have looked into improving the transmission temp for towing and was told changing the trans fluid to transynd from Allison will lower the temp.

Also Change the rear differential fluid. Eaton makes the rear locker and says to use a synthetic 75-90W for normal use and a 75-140W synthetic for heavy towing that are GL5 rated and do not have any friction modifyers added.

The GM spec. 9986115 stuff at GM parts is expensive. I'm sure there is GL5 rated synthetic cheaper out there.

I would like a little more power in 5th gear that I do not need to switch to 4th gear at almost any hill...

When towing you should not be using fifth gear. Not designed for that tow haul mode works great. JD ;)

I run Juice Attitude on level 3 all the time, towing, daily driving, whatever, it will hold 5 gear all day long over 55mph.

The LLY in 1st and 5th gear has the same power as the LB7 Dmax's(300HP/520FTLBS), when GM increased the power it is only 2-4 gears ;)

My LLY feels like something is being held back compared to my old '01 Dmax, likely having to do with the EPA crap.......

iljusin, The problem with trying to pull Monarch Pass in 3rd is the curves slow you down too much. You were probably easier on the engine pulling it in second anyway. I prefer to keep rpm's high when pulling really hard to keep the coolant and oil flow volume at their max. I remember watching old movies where the car with a couple of people in it couldn't get up that kind of mountain pass without overheating. Just look at the weight you are hauling up that grade. I'd say your truck is a good one.

Towing in 5th/OD is perfectly acceptable up to the max GCVWR of 22,000-lbs, unless the transmission is frequently dropping out of OD (like in rolling terrain). Then OD lockout might be a good idea, just to save wear and tear on the trans. However, using T/H will help, in that it'll hold lower gears longer and help to reduce shift busyness.

Is 2006 going to get more torque in 5th ear: I have filling that with more power 5th will work great for rolling terrain. On I25 I have 3-4 small hills in about 40 miles and I have to switch to 4th gear.
Adding programmer for this condition will help without damaging transmission?

5th with the allison is fine for towing according to the owners manuall. Also the GCVWR is 23500 now.

With my 01 I always used fifth for towing. I found it was much better in rolling hils with a the juice set in level 2, almost no down shifting. I'm sure the LLY will be much the same, add just a little power in fith and it will not hunt a rolling hills.

So What you are saying it's ok to tow in 5th on level to mild hills? JD
