what is the average tranny temp supposed to be on a 2003 duramax 3500 4 door. i bought the truck used and i changed the tranny fluid and external filter with 8 quarts of mobil 1 dexron 3. before changing the fluid i never payed any attention to the temp gauge. today i was doing alot of stop and go driving with no load at all and the temp creeped up to about 160 degrees. is this normal. that was the highest i have ever saw it go.

Jacob,

I have 100% M1 ATF in my Allison (03) and it runs 150-160 degF when it's warmed up.. It will also climb near 200 degF with the AC on in the summer in stop & go traffic.

MIne has never seen 200. About 195 tops in middle of summer. According to stock gauges.

Run in hot summer maximum about 175 to 180 degrees with this setup. See my following web page on the new Allison Tranny cooler upgrade. web page (http://www.outdoorsunlimited.net/~texsas/)

The Allison in my 2001 saw 210 once, while towing in 100+ heat between Deadwood & Mt Rushmore in South Dakota (steep & slow grade). Otherwise, it runs below 200, no matter the conditions.

fanz....... click on the link in my post, then click on the link near the top of the photos and it will take you to the web page where the coolers are sold.
My tranny temps consistently stay lower than they did with the original OEM cooler. AND the new cooler is manufactured by the same company who makes the OEM cooler, so it is a quality made high flow cooler.
Also, the cooler accepts the fittings from a 2002 HD as they are 5/8" tubing to 1/2" NPT. The newer year models use 5/8" to metric, so you will need to go to a dealer and get those fittings for a 2002HD cooler.(I don't know what year model they changed from 1/2"npt to metric, my 2002HD is 1/2" and my 2005HD is metric, that's the only difference. The cooler lines coming up to the cooler are the same on both trucks). Allison Transmission Cooler Upgrade (http://www.outdoorsunlimited.net/~texsas/)

at 230*f ATF starts to loose its lube propertys. any temps under 230 is fine, for the most part it will run around 150 ~ 170 depening on out side air temps . In exstream use (towing 90*day AC on) you may see 200 ~ 210. If GM didnt put the cooler right be hind the GMC / bowtie the cooler would be more effective , the 2006 truck have the cooler relocated in a better location.

I have a 2001 and see up to 210 towing in the summer heat when I'm pulling grades. The fan kicks on alot to keep it from going above that. I'm thinking about a tranny cooler upgrade to keep the fan from working so much. It really kills the power. I did the deep pan/transynd conv
this winter so it will be interesting to see if this helps the temp much.

Jimamatic, I am real curious as to how that helps temps also. Be sure to reply with results. Thanks in advance.
