I just noticed the rear end cover on my 05 gmc 2500hd truck is rusting. Truck has about 9000 miles on it. I was told that this is a sign of excessive heat. Should I service the rear?

thanks

The first rear diff service should be done once accumulating 500 towing miles or 10,000 non-towing miles - or some combination thereof.

So you're close enough that I'd think about having the first service done. Don't be alarmed to see some metal on the magnetic drain plug.

Rusting may just be a sign of inadequate undercoating. Most of these rear axles come with a pretty good coating. Clean it off, then spray on some good black engine paint. smile.gif
