View Full Version : Tailgate cable recall
Saw on the news last night that GM will be issuing a recall on tailgate cables. The Silverado was mentioned but the year was not. It appears that there was a couple cases where the tailgate came open, popped the cables and sent the tailgate flying into traffic.
Tommy,
You can read about it here. Looks like we'll be getting new straps for the tailgate.

Well don't go to my local Chevy dealer if one of your cable breaks. They haven't heard of any recalls. So I've been to the NHTSA web site and printed the recall from there. I'll take it to them Monday and have them call the 1-800 number listed and get my new cable. They want $15.00 for 1 cable. They promised I could get a refund if the recall came out after I bought it. Yea right.

I got the recall letter in the mail today. It stated they will replace the cables with stainless steel cables. Supplies will not be available until summer. The letter stated that in the meantime to not place heavy loads on the tailgate. I guess my fat ass will stay off. LOL
I had one break over the weekend  , while unloading the ATV. Good thing just one broke, and I was nearly off the ramp anyway. Called the dealer and they told me they will fix it Wed. I asked about the recall, and he said they haven't recieved any SS cables yet....mid summer?
I don't see how SS cables are going to help, at least in my case? Mine broke in the middle, inside the plastic casing and it had no nicks or cuts(the plastic) It broke where the cable gets bent when the tailgate is closed. I know the tailgate doesn't "crimp" the cable but maybe the constant tight loop over and over.
Both of mine broke in the middle. I think the moisture is getting in the cable and settling to the low spot. I could tell mine were rusted through. Stainless should take care of this. Two years seems to be the max life, so if yours are approaching two years old, don't trust them. Mine broke while standing on the tailgate at the dump station. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground. Lucky not to go into the dumpster. This was about a month before the recall and I complained and called GM. Got little sympathy and they wouldn't even change the cables. I guess they were worried about liability. The service guy told me it was from flexing. I knew he didn't know what he was talking about or just covering up.
I'm staying with the VR Straps... No chance these will break... :D

I got my letter yesterday, I too will stick with my VR straps. But, I might get the new Stainless Steel GM cables in case the VR straps will not work with my new V notched 5th wheel tailgate.

My driver side broke last weekend (in the middle like everyone else).
Stopped by the dealer and picked up a replacement for $15. Guy told me to hold on to the receipt and I'd get a refund when the replacement ones come in this summer.
I could have gone to the service counter and they would have written up a ticket and replaced it under warranty, but I was in a hurry and just paid the $15 and was on my way.

I stopped by Ideal GMC Frederick,MD., and they said that they wouldn't replace my cables because my truck has over 36,000 miles on it and that makes it out of warranty, recall or not. They also said they would never work on my truck "ever" again even for the rest of the 100 K engine warranty because I gave them a bad score on the dealer warranty survey card after they did some very poor work on my truck. And then they told us that they wouldn't do any warranty work on our car, that we purchased from them either because of the same  survey. I guess I'll have to go to another dealer for the straps and any future work. My wife got so mad, she traded in the car and bought a KIA Soreinto 4x4 at another dealer. I didn't think a dealer could deny warranty work just because they are mad at the rating they got from you!

Got my recall notice today and checked with dealer and was told that new cables would not be available until July. Guess I`ll just have to keep on using the baling wire.

I'd also find another dealer, but I think that GM should be made aware that you were penalized for replying truthfully yo a survey, and that no amount of intimidation from said dealer is acceptable.
Anonymity would be nice some times...
I guess I gotta ask... If you gave them such a bad rating why in the world would you go back there? A dealer is an independant businessman, there are idiots and there are angels. If GM hears enough complaints about a dealer they have been known to pull their franchise. Also, that GMAC floor plan financing is a powerful weapon. By the way mileage is irrelevant in a safety recall!!

Mudflap is exactly correct - a safety recall is not "warranty work." I had a Dodge once - a mini Ram Van (K chassis panel truck). I bought it in PA, got a safety recall for a shield on the rear brake proportioning valve. I went to a big dealership in NJ on a Friday morning. After standing in line at the service desk for a half-hour or so, I gave the writer the recall notice. He said, "did you buy that truck here?" I answered, "no." He handed me the recall notice back and said, "we only have enough parts to do this on trucks for OUR customers." I pushed the notice back across the desk and said, "fine - I want you to put that in writing an sign YOUR NAME on it! Because if I drive off this lot this morning without it and have an accident, I'm suing YOU, THIS DEALERSHIP and DODGE for MILLIONS!" Needless to say, I got the recall service - and I never went back to that dealership again!
