Changed the front differential fluid at 42K miles. There were a lot of filings on the end of the drain plug. I was quite surprised. Seems that the drain plug is magnetized and holds the filings. There was almost 1/4 inch of filings on the plug. Does that seem a little excessive? I've seen 100K miles as the recommended change interval on the front differential fluid. I don't use 4 wheel drive much at all. 2 or 3 times per winter. I put in 75W90 synthetic gear lube.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks.
This is what the front diff plug looked like on my 03 at 5Kmiles when I replaced the factory fluid with Mobil-1 75W90...

I wouldn't worry. I had a bunch of junk on mine the first time and the next all looked clean.

That depends upon your definition of "a lot", but so long as it wasn't a "holy sh#t!" amount then you're probably okay. There will almost always be some shavings.
