Silly question....what are the symptoms that indicate the shocks need replacement? ('01 CC D/A 34K) I feel a slight jerk while driving empty. Not sure if it's in the suspension or drive-train. It reminds me of a spark plug missing.

As soon as you signed the paperwork to buy the truck, they needed to be replaced.
J/K, but seriously, the factory shocks are the cheapest, poorest riding things I've ever seen. Replace them with Rancho 9000 series if you want adjustability for on-road use (about $65 ea.) or Bilsteins for firm control and great off-road handling. (About $50 ea from eshocks.com)
You will be amazed at the difference. With 33" tires and the Rancho shocks, I'd compare my truck to my buddy's Escalade on all but the worst sections of fwy. The 4x4 2500HD probably rides the worst on fwy expansion joints.
