When I spoke with a PSD owning buddy today he indicated that the new PSD 6 liter diesel will have an Alison 5 speed automatic option. So he's waiting for that before trading in his truck. He had spoken with an engineer involved with the Alison building program and he said they were expanding their manufacturing space in preparation for this project. Anyone in Dmax land know any more about this? I can hardly believe it. That could also be the reason GM is building the Dmax equipped trucks so sparingly just in case they get the rug pulled out from under them. 80% of the reason for me buying the GM was the Alison tranny however I certainly have fallen in love with the Dmax engine.Stu

dmaxstu,

It is a Allison look and operate a like......Called the Torqueshift designed and being built by Ford in Ohio .....It is a 5 speed with the tow haul feature that offers engine braking in all gears......Sound familiar?????

I mean this is a real Alison, there is also a revamped version of their present transmission with a modified valve body available mimmicking the Alison and offering 5 speeds. Stu

The new Ford transmission will be designated as the 5R110W. It's a 5-speed, and will have other modifications to handle the 550 ft-lb from the PSD. Hopefully, it will be more reliable than the 4R100. I have replaced a ton of the 4R100s. TC failure is the most common problem. Contrary to popular belief, it is no better than the POS Dodge 47RE automatic.

My understanding is that the new tranny is the 5R110W as mentioned above. I've read no mention of an Allison over on the F-D.com site, where a lot of Ford insiders post.

Perhaps your buddy heard it will be just like the Allison and got confused. I'd still rather have the Allison.

FEDEX uses the Freightliner chassis in many of there box units(Utilimaster)..The drive train is Cummins straight 6 deisel with Allison 1000 series trans with a freightliner rear axle..I have worked on alot of these in that last 3 yrs..body maintence, collision damage...It is a good setup, the allison has no tow/haul feature on these 1000 series units, just a 5 speed....

GM has owned Allison since 1911 so there will be no rug pulling. I understand that the Allison with Tow/Haul is exclusive to GM for five years starting with the 2001 model year.

F o r d Motor Company is in a difficult financial crisis. It would not be in their best interest to be paying GM for their transmissions. Think of the PR generated for GM if it were known that F o r d had to buy a GM product in order to keep up. Don't you also think that GM would keep a few technology steps ahead of the version they sell Ford.

I believe the Allison 1000's in the Freightliner chassis and Motor Homes are in tow/haul all the time.

My motorhome has the tow/haul always engaged but it does have a O/D off switch. BTW is does not have a temp gauge either.

I stoped in at F**d and picked up a Brochure
on the new 6.0L 32-valve PSD/G2 and also the new
"TorqShift" 5-Speed A/T it has a spin-on oil filter and all Electro-Mechanical shifts it go's
on to say it also has "Tow/Haul" mode, its Gear Ratios look to be the same as well with a 3.09 1st
2.20 2nd, 1.54 3rd, 1.00 4th, and the same 0.71 5th, in the pix of the Trans it shows a "PTO" cover also, but it dos not look like an Allison ............I can FAX the Brochure of the Diesel and Trans to who ever wants one........... ;)

D-max gave us ratios for the TorqShift and I have Ratios for the Allison.
Gear TS A-1000
1st 3.09 3.10
2nd 2.20 1.81
3rd 1.54 1.41
4th 1.00 1.00
5th 0.71 0.71
So the TS has quite a bit deeper 2nd and somewhat deeper 3rd. I hope that G2PSD has an even wider torque curve than the D-max cause that looks like a 3 speed auto set of splits with a creeper gear and overdrive tacked on. If the torque converter is set up a little looser (higher stall speed) you might not notice the wider splits, but if it locks in 2nd-5th you'll notice!

The chart shows a Torque Converter Stall Ratio of 1.86 and a Torque Converter Capacity Factor of 95000lb, the Engine has 325hp @ 3300rpm and 560lb of Torque @ 2000rpm. also has a oil capacity of 15 Quarts, Cooling System has 10.8 Quarts..........Bore & Stroke is 3.74 X 4.134
and Cast-Iron block and Head, Integral oil cooler like the D-MAX and a gear-drive Water pump.
