View Full Version : "Hot Check" Tranny Fluid Question

I've done the "cold check" level (WITH ENGINE RUNNING) as per the manual instruction.

The manual is not clear if you have the engine
running or not when you do the "hot check" :confused:

I would appreciate some help with this one.

Hey guys,
Be careful about filling to the "hot" mark when the trany temp is about 190 F. I did & on my next trip with my 12,500 lb 5er, it blew tranny fluid all over the bottom of my truck. I took it to the dealer & found out from their tranny man that the "hot" mark is when the tranny is 240 F. At 190 F leave it down about 1/2 to 1 qt.

There is about a 3-4 inch range from cold to hot! (no smart ass comments please) Tranny fuild really thins out when it is hot so definitly don't overfill that sucker when it is cold or only medium warm/hot. Mine is at the bottom of the HOT range when tranny temp is 180-200. Cold it is all the way down to the cold range. Big difference.

You always check the fluid level with the Trans at operating temps in Park.. Operating temps are in the 160-200 Degrees..

I disagree with the tranny man.. Few (if they want it to live) Automatic transmissions run in 240 Degree area.. Your trans was probably overfilled to begin with or the dipstick is not correct... I run mine right up at the top of the HOT Full mark...

Yeah, 240 sounds high to me as well...
