IF 1500HD and the 2500LD seem to be so similar to each other then why does GM bother to manufacture both of them? Just courious?

Perception. Some people don't want to drive a 2500. They want a half ton and don't know its really a 3/4.

It is a cheap and easy way to market a competitor to the F-150 supercrew. GM has no other half ton crew cabs with the exception of the Avalanche and its Caddy counterpart which are actually SUTs. --Nick

Sometimes it's for EPA regs. I know the 1500 Suburban with the 6.5 is a 1500 HD or 2500 LD, depending on how you look at it, but Gm just calls it a 1500. It has 2500 brakes, the L65 engine and 4L80E tranny. Also, it has a 3.42 rear end. From what I was told, they (GM) made this particular truck to avoid some sort of fuel mileage penalty, or something like that on the 1500 Suburbans. Corporate loopholes.

Are we talking 2001-2003? They are the same basic truck. The 1500HD is only available in a Crew Cab short bed. The 2500LD is only available as a Standard Cab or Ext Cab short bed. No duplication, but the 1500HD name is misleading.

For 2004 the 1500HD is now a 2500 Crew Cab. There is now a 1500 crew cab. They cut the short bed down further and it is a Crew Cab with the same basic length and wheelbase as an Ext Cab with a 6.5

Ah, beg to differ with ya there, my truck definately an 03, definately a Crew Cab, definately a short bed, and definately a 2500HD.
Unless that rotten stealer plucked a 2500HD badge and stuck it on the side of a 1500! :D
