Check out this part this could just be the fix need vs GM's replacement part.Also not a bad price @ $230.

96 Thanks for the info. I have an 05 with a definative rattle in the steering. Went to the dealer and a tech drove it and could not feel the rattle - further, they said I have the new part. It was interesting thought to overhear the conversation between the tech and the service Gal. she said GM has told them not to do anything about this. This steering is worse than my 95 with 120K.

The tech told me exactly how to take the part out and check it. I seem to recall that the GM part was no where near the $200 figure. then again its no good!

Personally, I can't stand the rattle and might just buy the part from aftermarket.

Any 05s out there with the same issue?

When I make a left turn I hear a clunk clunk noise. Could this be caused by the shaft? I can't find out where it is coming from.

I can feel the rattle in the steering wheel but do not hear any noise.

My steering wheel feels like it will fall off in my lap. Only part of it is the shaft. The wheel also has a lot of play in the tilt joint. I can wiggle the wheel side to side and feel and see the slop. The air bag is also loose on the wheel so that when turning the wheel at some speeds it drops to the other side and causes a clunk.

My '02 was bad right out of the box. After several trips back to the dealer they finally changed out the intermediate shaft. It's better but not what I would call a permanent fix. I wonder who makes the new shaft for GM. Looking at the photo on the Borgeson page, it looks very similar to what was taken out of my truck.

a 15.00 grease kit can fix the stock one when done properly...lot of money IMO. I have installed the Borgson and its nice piece, but out of my budget.

My 2004.5 has been developing the typical rattle/clunk/noise for the last 5000 miles or so (total 30k on truck). It's getting really bad now. Will this truck already have the "improved" part?

Truck's going to the dealer next week - I'll be interested in (and will post) what they say and/or do about it.

Before I recieved the new shaft the dealer did infact grease my original shaft. It felt good for a very short time. I guess I have a hard time believing that grease is a fix for all that slop. Here is a question for you, when the tech installs the replacement shaft, are they pre lubed or do they require lubing before installation? It sounds like you have had decent luck with this lube procedure.

they come prelubed but I always shot an extra tube in. I've yet to have an updated shaft come back rattling after being installed this way, but I've had varing results w/ the grease kits alone in the old shafts. IIRC the updated shaft was about $140 installed @ our shop.

decided i didn't want to wait for the new truck to come in before i fixed the rattle in this '05. 20 mins later i was out of the shop and no rattle. ps, i wanted to test drive a LBZ on the lot, but it was sold off the truck!!
