tranny stuck in second

yesterday i drove my 2001 d/a with 35k and had the tranny not get past 2nd. i drove back to the house parked it for an hour and tried again and it has worked fine since. any ideas?

Are you sure it wasnt third? Sounds like classic limp to me.

yes, it was third, i didnt count first because it is so low. it pegged at about 40. whats that about?

Just a thought , but If you havent changed the fuel filter that could be the problem. I get 18000 miles at the most from a filter. You can tell when they start to go. slow shifts and performance at full throttle falls off. When you go to limp mode because of old filter then turn off and let the truck set a while then start it will run for some time but it will go into limp before too many more miles.
