View Full Version : 265/75-16 OR 255/85-16???
Gentlemen - I know this tire topic has been beat to death but I really can't decide what to put on my truck next. I have 245/75-16 Michelin LTX A/T's (load range E) on it now and they have give me almost 90,000 km (54,000 miles) of a 50/50 mix of highway and gravel. I would like to have a little more clearance and make the truck sit up a little higher - anyone shed any light on this for me????? :confused:
I just put Michelin 265X75R16E A/S tires on my 2500HD. It sits taller than the 245's, not a lot but approximately and 1-1 1/2 inches. Performance has not been affected that I can tell. The speedo is about 1.5 to 2 mph slow compared to my GPS. Love the ride and handling compared to the Firestone's which only went 22,700 miles. Worse wear of any LT tire I ever had.

I've got 26k on the front set of firestones and they are only about half worn. The back tires were replaced this week. They were slick, I guess I was spinning them on wet pavement and didn't know it. I bought one tire and put the spare on the ground. Cost me $150 to buy the tire and put he spare on the ground. I put the new ones on the back. I am figuring that the front tires will wear out about the same time these new tires on the back do.
Then I am going with Michelin.

I'm running Dunlop Radial Rover RV's in the 255/85-16 size and like them a lot. At about an inch taller than 265's, they don't rub and fill the fenders nicely. The speedo is off about 5mph at highway speeds and the revs run about 200rpm less than the stock 245's. Tread noise is noticeable, but not annoying. I think SoCalDmax has pics of 255/85's you can check out.
Nice rig SoCal - how far up did you go with the torsion bars?? How are the 255's holding up??? Thanks!! :cool:

I drove mine off the floor and straight to my tire dealer and put on Michelin LTX 265X75R16 MS and love them. I don't have very many miles on yet but they ride better than the stock steeltrex I took off.

Going to a 265/75 will raise your truck less than an inch, while 285/75's or 255/85's will get you about 1.5 inches, so if you're looking for ground clearance tires aren't going to do all that much. However, if you want to fill out your wheel wells, and make the truck look a little better, then larger tires are a definite plus.
I went with the 285/75's myself because the 255/85's looked too skinny for me. The 285's and the 255's are about the same height, so it's a matter of personal preference.

I run 265 yokohama geolanders on 16 x 8 chrome wheels in the summer, and 255 kelly msr's that are studded and siped on stock wheels in the winter(to save my nice wheels) and have found this to be an excellent combo. I ran 285 BFG's in the summer on my 01, and liked that as well.

I have the 265/75 Kelly Safari MSR's on my rig. They really brought the truck out. It's a fairly agressive tire that I think gets good traction. They do put out a fair amount of road noise at interstate speeds but they're not aggrivating. I like the height of them and performance is good enough for my tastes.

i have the kelly 255* 85*16, they are the the tallest tire i could find with the stock width(33"), did not have to adjust anything to make fit, will slightly rub on the mud flap when turning sharp and hitting something, like turning into your driveway and crossing the sidewalk, very minor, look great, they do not give the ride of a LTX 265X75R16 MS, but are taller, at 73mph, you now are still under 2000rpm, great for milage, now have 28000k and 40 percent left of tread wear, would recomend :D :D
