Is it necessary to jack up the axle to change the shocks out or do you just unbolt the old shocks & install new ones. Is there anything else i should be aware of in changing shocks.

It's probably easier to do the rears if You jack up the truck some. The shocks limit the travel so don't jack until the wheel is off the ground or it will be harder.

I didn't jack up the truck when I installed the shocks, it worked out fine. 2 things will help a little - air tools and turning the front wheels when doing the front shocks for better access.

I didn't jack mine up either, though I did use a floor jacket to jostle things in the front a bit when I misaligned the shock eye and the mount. It's easier in front if you attach the lower mount then cut the band and let the shock expand into the upper mount. One of my rear shocks was just about perfectly aligned with the holes even with the compression band in place. I had my daughter jump up and down on the rear bumper to get the lower bolt in. The other side wasn't that close so I attached the upper end and grabbed the shock so my hand covered part of the blue boot and the shock tube. Then, squeezing very hard, I cut the band and using my hand as a brake let the shock expand until the lower hole lined up. Piece 'o cake. I'm sure there are easier ways.
