I am trying to compare the micron rating for oil filters available for the Duramax. So far I have learned the Wix Oil filter 57202 is rated at 8 microns and the Baldwin Oil filter is rated at 8 as well. Does anyone know what the GM factory oil filter micron rating is?
Jim
Jim,
In October 02 I sent emails to AC Delco, Baldwin, Wix and AMSOIL requesting filter % efficiency ratings in microns for their DMAX OIL filters. All responded except AMSOIL. Here are the numbers I was quoted.
AC DELCO PF2232: 25 microns nominal, 40 microns absolute (Beta numbers not stated)
WIX 57202 13 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 37 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
Baldwin B1441: 8 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 23 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
AMSOIL SDF-52: No response - May be identical to B1441 since Baldwin is OEM for AMSOIL
So far the Baldwin B1441 has the best rating I have found.

I've been cutting open the filters for my truck in order to find one w/ good quality. The Baldwin and the Amsoil are the exact same filter, however the baldwin has a better price. Also the stock (Black) and the AC Delco filters are exactly the same. I would definitely stay away from the Fram and Pennzoil filters. They are very cheaply made with thin shells. The elements are made with cardboard end caps that will leak unfiltered oil to the filter outlet and could possibly come apart. W/ the D/MAX oil pressure they would be an accident waiting to happen. I have eliminated the use of these filters in all of my vehicles
The items I am comparing are:
Shell thickness (W/dial calipers)
Pleat depth
Amt.of pleats
Quality of end caps and bonding to media
Internal bypass valve
Anti drain back valve
Center core design
Untill I see something better the Baldwin B1441 will be my filter of choice.
a bear,
I've examined a few cut open erl filters:
Baldwin B1441
FRAM PH9100
MIGHTY Engine Gaurd II M2999
AC Delco PF2232
OEM Champion
Check the first link in my sig for pics of the cut open filters, especially the FRAM with the card board end caps

Dragster, the burning question is, what filter do you use and or endorse ? Excellent pics ! My problem is every time I enlarge it, it imediatly shrinks again ? Kinda hard to draw a conclusion....Jeesh, sounds like I need Viagra ! LOL ! :D

If you wish to locate a local Baldwin Filter Dealer go to baldwinfilter.com and enter your zip code. There is a local dealer in my city and it is convenient with no shipping.
Toddster,
Excluding the Fram filter, IMHO I would not have a problem using any of the filters that I have examined so far (listed in my post above). Of course, I have no way to test the filter media. I wouldn't 'endorse' one filter over the others - but I do know which one to AVOID
I bought a case of Baldwins from Kennedy early on after paying $18 plus for (1) AC Delco PF2232 at the dealer. The micron ratings posted by jbplock indicate that this was a good choice
BTW, I purchased the filters that I've examined except for the FRAM and the MIGHTY - those two filters were sent to me by members of this forum.
