View Full Version : How much oil consumption is normal?
I was wondering what most people are seeing their Duramax's consume/mi. ratio and what's the current miles on the motor? Brand of oil would also be nice?
Thanks.

20k on the truck. Changed the oil at 500 miles, 2000 miles and 5000 miles. Now change it every 5000 miles. Using Shell Rotella T since the first change. Never used a drop of oil, the dipstick is still at full when I change the oil.

Not a drop with over 38,000 miles, Delvac 1 running 7,000 miles between changes and testing. Will be installing Racor bybass then extend to 10,000 miles, with I'm sure no loss!
Whats the best??? That is up to you!!! ;)
44,000+ miles .. Shell Rotella T ... changed every 5,000 miles ... never had to add any oil between changes .... Jim
Dino till 5k,switched to Amsoil 15w 40 Syn,switched to Delvac 5w 40 .... Running year round wouldn't switch, won't switch ....
Creeping up on 36k,blew a quart out when I first switched to Synthetic .... Since then never a drop between changes ... Have you seen GM's reasonable oil consumption TSB ?? Make your hair stand up on the back of your neck ....
The accepted rate of oil consumption for the 6.6L Duramax(TM) Diesel engine is 0.946 liter (1 qt) within 379 liters (100 gallons) of fuel used. This rate only applies to vehicles under warranty, maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule, driven at legal speeds and within design intent of the vehicleThat still wouldn't be cool if they were supplying the oil ...
Mac
Now at 15K miles, changed to Rotella synthetic at 5500 miles, now on a 6K mile oil change schedule, no visible drop on dipstick between changes. No towing, much Interstate at 75 mph or more, carrying up to 1000 lbs in bed.

58,000 miles, Shell Rotella dino every 8000 miles, always full.
I use about a quart between 5000-7500 mile changes.
Consumption is decreasing.
I don't baby the truck.

142,000 miles. Use mostly Shell Rotella. Change it about every 5,000 miles and the filter every other time. Have added oil after heavy towing out West in extreme heat and hills. Usually don't add or use any significant amount.

48,000 miles-->change between 5000-7500 miles-->Shell Rotella T since first change-->never had to add except this past July when pulling 8000lb TT and decided to experiment for one tank and shift to 5th on every hill instead of leaving in 6th and losing a little speed. Got worse mileage for tank and used a quart of oil. Rev's and EGT went way up using 5th so I decided that I'd tolerate the loss of 5MPH and keep in 6th for all but the longest hills.

My 02' ---- burned one quart from 0 to 23k.
My 03' ---- burned 1/2 quart from 0 to 19k.
Maybe an 04' is in order?
Both of my trucks seemed to have had a "time" when they would digest a little oil. I think that the 02 gulped down a little between 7 & 10k. The 03' ate it's oil between 11 & 15k.
I generally run 100 to a max of 150 hours between oil changes. The mileage may vary but the hours don't lie. ;)
GM's loss seems close to "spec" for these trucks using dino oil. Remeber that they (GM) are speaking in "Warranty" speak about the oil useage.
Burner------> :D
Change at 1.5K, will change again about 45K...and about every 5K after that. Always dino Rotella T.
