I'm a lurker for sometime now and haven't seen anything mentioned on how hot the allison gets when your hauling heavy loads? i just got mine a month ago,a 3500 crewcab dmax/allison, i'll be pulling a 42' boat this summer and a knowing what to look for will make it less stressful. thanks, gary

Surprisingly, the "search feature" now works. Search under "Allison temperature", matching any words. There was a long discussion on 11/20/01 on this very subject. There is very little that has not already been hashed out to everyone advantage. You will enjoy towing your boat or do you call it a ship? Good luck.

what does your 42' boat weight...I have seen the allison most of the time at the 150~160 range with it in tow/haul mode with 8000 lbs in start stop conditions. highway maybe slightly cooler. tow haul helps with heat build up...at 42 feet your getting close to the 16 k tow rating ?I am sure it will do it even if its 20,000lbs+

^..Search has been working for a good while (since the last server upgrade), but no one chooses to use it. And it's free! :D ;)

Here is what you would find (copy and paste as we are UBB-less)

apr &nutnbut thanks for the tip i'll check it out. mark the boat weights 9600# dry add 300 gallons of fuel all the wifes junk,a triple axle trailer, my guess is around 14 to 15,000. i plan to bring it to a scale this spring. my last truck was a 3500, 6.5 that got pretty hot pulling it.

why wait: you will wish you had a dmax sooner!!! these things pull like a freight train! Pull a boat back from mid NH about 160 miles total no problem with hills or traffic. want to pass even at 70 mph just feed a little fuel on the fire and it off and running!use the cruise control it will stop it from down shifting.

mark can't wait for the chance to pull but the boat is still in it's sleeping bag. we go to misouri a few times during the summer and them hills will give it a good test.

My Allison runs at about 200 degrees in the summer when going solo in town!! I am a little concerned what it will be when I tow the 10k 5er we are planning to get next year.

I am seriously thinking about going with the deep pan and Transynd, but I shouldn't "have to" as this truck was rated to pull X amount of weight from the factory as is.....

My trans runs 200 in traffic in the summer also. I don't use tow/haul so the fact that the torque converter is unlocked contributes to the heat. On a trip last year from Michigan to Blyth California my trans temp never got over 210. Goin west out of Phoenix I was going 75 mph into a headwind so I had the pedal to the metal in 5th gear. The air temp was 117 degrees on my mirror display and the trans temp was 200 so you shouldn't have any problem with high trans temps.

Well search feature does work but I will post on here. Mine was a 170-180 daily driver/towing. Then I switched to the "Deep" pan and synthetic and temps are consistent 150...However on my last excursion to Vegas where I was REALLY leaning on it (by leaning on it i mean my EGT's were 1150 and boost at 20lbs going up a 17 mile 6% grade) the Allison saw 185...I highly recommend the deeper pan and synthetic fluid. No reason to debate why GM or Allison should have done it, but rather do it and increase longevity.

Enjoy and have fun towing. You will really find this combination to pull like you will not believe.

Where do you get the deep pan...from Allison or GMC? About what does it cost?

Thanks!

Hey Alamovet,

Found these on another page:

Pan: 29536522 $48.87
Gasket: 29536526 $29.36
Filter-Suction, Deep: 29537966 $21.22
Spin on filter: 29537268 $8.87
Transdyn Synthetic fluid: 27101-CTSC $28.00 per gal (you will need 3 gallons)

Do a search for a local Allison/Detroit Diesel dealer they should be able to hook you up.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Last summer was running a combined weight of 32K across the high desert. I don't remember the temp outside but it was hot. The tranny was shifting frequently but never did it run warmer than 185. I frankly couldn't belive it. For the record the engine coolant never moved either.

The trans pan gasket is reusable, and from what others have posted, the gasket is well made and should not need replacement when changing the pan.

I hope to install the deep pan, internal filter, and Transynd this weekend - and did not buy a pan gasket...

Of course, there are those occasional 'OOPS - I just dropped the gasket into a rotating fan blade' or the kids trying to see how far the gasket stretches type of accidents... :D

Hey mdrag:

My middle son is stationed at Tinker and lives in Harrah. Late last year he bought a 2001HD with the Allison and 8.1 gasser. I tried to talk him into a Dmax but he didn't want to "hassle" with a diesel. Now all I hear is cry cry cry about 8-10 mpg around town and 6 when he tows a 28' camper. What can I say, at least he stayed out of jail when he was growing up, but I must have missed the boat someplace. I had another son at Fort Sill so I saw a bit of Lawton too. Take care
